Laurent Lignier’s parcel is located on stony red soils close to Bonnes Mares and shows something of the grand cru’s structure and reticence. Firm sappy and dense, it’s a Chambolle that nods towards Morey-St-Denis in style, with 25% whole bunches adding some sap and texture. It needs time.

Varietal

Pinot Noir

Regularly described as being the grape varietal responsible for producing the world's most romantic wines, Pinot Noir has long been associated with elegance and a broad range of flavors The name means 'black pine' in French, and this is due to the fact that the fruit of this particular varietal is especially dark in color, and hangs in a conical shape, like that of a pine cone. Despite being grown today in almost every wine producing country, Pinot Noir is a notoriously difficult grape variety to cultivate. This is because it is especially susceptible to various forms of mold and mildew, and thrives best in steady, cooler climates. However, the quality of the fruit has ensured that wineries and vintners have persevered with the varietal, and new technologies and methods have overcome many of the problems it presents. Alongside this, the wide popularity and enthusiasm for this grape has ensured it will remain a firm favorite amongst wine drinkers for many years to come.

Burghound

89-92 A very pretty nose is composed primarily of red and dark fruit scents, in particular cherry, along with wisps of lavender and earth. There is much better volume to the muscular and more powerful middle weight flavors that tighten up somewhat on the dusty, balanced and more complex and persistent finish. This is a bit coarse if not actually rustic and should age well.

89-91 The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Baudes 1er Cru contains 25% whole bunch fruit this year. It has a clean, pure bouquet of raspberry and wild strawberry, the one-third new oak lending volume and presence. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin. This feels well balanced and fresh in the mouth, but there is a sense of strictness and linearity on the finish. Fine.
