You’re eating clay,’ says Nadine Gublin about this rich, structured expression of Burgundy’s biggest red Grand Cru, made with grapes from a 1.28ha parcel that’s 38 years’ old. The 60% new wood is quite marked here, but it’s balanced by layers of red and black fruit, tobacco and clove spices from 35% whole bunches and savoury tannins. Drinking Window 2026 – 2036.

The 2018 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru is matured with 35% whole bunch and 60% new oak. It has a slightly opaque bouquet, closed and not ready to come out and play at this early stage. The palate is grippy on the entry and quite oaky, and the wood tannins feel a little intrusive toward the finish. Hopefully this will meld together with bottle age, but this year I prefer the Corton-Bressandes tasted alongside.

This too is exceptionally ripe with jammy black pinot fruit and warm earth scents that are trimmed in a hint of prune. There is better verve to the large-scaled flavors that are not quite as dense as those of the Bressandes but do offer good power on the very firm finish that is again shaped by relatively grippy and inelegant tannins.

Classical ruby red. Subtle with delicate spicy and fruity (vanilla, cherry) and slightly mentholated notes. The palate is delicious and smooth. Tasty fruity texture evolving into spicy and menthol notes. Fine, fresh and subtle tannins.
