A beautiful white with sliced-mango, cooked-apple and lemon-curd aromas and flavors. Full-bodied with lots of fruit and intensity. Some tropical fruit at the end. White peaches, too. Delicious already. Drink or hold.

Chardonnay

Of all the white wine grape varietals, surely the one that has spread the furthest and is most widely appreciated is Chardonnay. This green-skinned grape is now grown all over the Old and New Worlds, from New Zealand to the Americas, from England to Chile, and is one of the first varietals people think of when considering white wine grapes. Perhaps this is because of its huge popularity, which reached a peak in the 1990s, thanks to new technologies combining with traditional methods to bring the very best features out of the Chardonnay grape and allow its unique qualities to shine through. Most fine Chardonnay wines use a process known as malolactic fermentation, wherein the malic acids in the grape juice are converted to lactic acids, allowing a creamier, buttery nature to come forward in the wine. No grape varietal is better suited to this process than Chardonnay, which manages to balance these silky, creamy notes with fresh white fruit flavors beautifully.

The beautifully and unforgettable French region of Cote De Beaune has been revered throughout the centuries, and recognized as one of the key producer's of the world's finest white wines. The region is highly respected as an excellent producer of Chardonnay wines, and the Chardonnay grapes which grow there, on the southern slopes of the Cote d'Or, are packed full of the unique and powerful characteristics of this very special terroir. Interestingly, Cote De Beaune produces more red wine than white wine, despite its white wines being so famous. The red wines of Cote De Beaune are mainly made from Pinot Noir, but are relatively very light and fruity in their character, perfect for sipping on a warm, sunny day alongside a wide range of foods.

More evident wood can be found on the moderately exotic aromas of white peach, lychee, jasmine tea and a hint of tangerine peel. Once again there is a really lovely mouthfeel to the delicious and vibrant flavors that, much like the Puligny villages, are not particularly concentrated yet the refreshingly dry and sneaky long finish is impressively complex. This elegant effort should drink well both young and with up to a decade of bottle age.

Restrained, delicate meadow flower aromas. Growing in intensity, oak currently prevails on palate hardening the impression on the finish; it simply needs time. The fruit core is pure and concentrated, built to last. Will develop beautifully over the next decade and hold a further six to eight years.

On the nose the 2018 Beaune Clos des Mouches Blanc ler Cru has more concentration than Jobard's Meursault-Blagny, with lightly honeyed fruit, yellow plum and a touch of yellow flowers. I admire the complexity here. The palate is well balanced with a bit of oak to be subsumed on the entry, fresh and lively, good acidity, pretty with a lilting, harmonious finish. Too irresistible in its youth? I would not begrudge anyone cracking this open now. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 white tasting.

Winery Notes

An outstanding wine. Pale yellow colour. Complex floral nose of white lilac and white rose. Once open, fruity aromas come to the fore, evolving towards grilled hazelnut and almond. When the wine is more mature, the nose is surprisingly strong and fifteen minutes of aeration produce wonderful notes of white truffle, citron (cedrat), honey and nutmeg, elegantly meshed together. Very lively on the palate. Its rich texture is in evidence, but also its structure and minerality. It is round, but never heavy. Harmonious fullness in the aftertaste. This wine allies remarkably the complexity and elegance of a Bâtard-Montrachet with the power of a Corton-Charlemagne.
