The 2017 Beaune 1er Cru Les Grèves offers up a sweet bouquet of cassis, cherries, forest floor and spices. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied, with a deep core of succulent fruit that displays excellent concentration, largely concealing its fine structuring tannins before concluding with a chalky finish.

The beautifully and unforgettable French region of Cote De Beaune has been revered throughout the centuries, and recognized as one of the key producer's of the world's finest white wines. The region is highly respected as an excellent producer of Chardonnay wines, and the Chardonnay grapes which grow there, on the southern slopes of the Cote d'Or, are packed full of the unique and powerful characteristics of this very special terroir. Interestingly, Cote De Beaune produces more red wine than white wine, despite its white wines being so famous. The red wines of Cote De Beaune are mainly made from Pinot Noir, but are relatively very light and fruity in their character, perfect for sipping on a warm, sunny day alongside a wide range of foods.

This is very open and spicy with white pepper, dried strawberries and hints of cherries. Full-bodied and dense with gorgeous ripe fruit and intensity. Layered and flavorful. Needs a year or two to come completely together. Drink after 2022.

The 2017 Beaune Grèves 1er Cru has a pure, quite expressive bouquet of maraschino cherries mixed with crushed strawberry and rose petal aromas. The palate is sweet and quite candied on the entry, featuring plush red currant and raspberry notes, and very smooth and open-knit toward the finish. This is a joyful Grèves, though not as long-term as other recent vintages.

A riper combination features notes of cassis, plum liqueur, violet and plenty of iron-inflected earth. The succulent, even opulent, medium-bodied flavors possess a highly seductive texture before culminating in a grippy bitter cherry pit-suffused finish.

At the heart of Drouhin’s reputation for great value and quality are their Beaune red wines. While Beaune Clos des Mouches is their signature Beaune red and white, Les Greves is also one of their top Beaune red wine. With nearly 1ha that is farmed biodynamically since the mid 1990s, the wines made from this site are consistently elegant and harmonious. There is good concentration and depth, partly due to the very low yields in 2016. Aged for 18 months in oak barrels with 20% new.

Winery Notes

A great wine, one of the most representative of Beaune, the capital of Burgundy. Intense and bright red colour. The nose displays aromas of red currant with some spicy notes. With age and in some vintages, the aromas become even more marked by spicy and smoky touches, such as tobacco. On the palate, the tannins are refined and create a seductive harmony. In the aftertaste there is a marked flavour of "crème de cassis" (cream of black currant) and delicate touches of wood.
