This is turning out better than I foresaw as my original review (see herein) noted some finishing dryness but that was not the case here. A still exceptionally fresh and very primary if highly perfumed nose is composed of spicy red berry fruit aromas that are at once layered and pure. There is both excellent richness and volume to the naturally sweet, detailed and intensely mineral-infused medium-full flavors that exude a subtle classiness on the powerful and focused finale. If there is a nit it’s that the complexity that this normally displays isn’t present, or at least not yet. That said I underscore that this is in magnum and thus the ’06 Musigny is still a decade plus away from its apogee. In sum this is classy stuff that is very definitely still on the way up so patience required and particularly so in the larger format bottling.

Varietal

Pinot Noir

Regularly described as being the grape varietal responsible for producing the world's most romantic wines, Pinot Noir has long been associated with elegance and a broad range of flavors The name means 'black pine' in French, and this is due to the fact that the fruit of this particular varietal is especially dark in color, and hangs in a conical shape, like that of a pine cone. Despite being grown today in almost every wine producing country, Pinot Noir is a notoriously difficult grape variety to cultivate. This is because it is especially susceptible to various forms of mold and mildew, and thrives best in steady, cooler climates. However, the quality of the fruit has ensured that wineries and vintners have persevered with the varietal, and new technologies and methods have overcome many of the problems it presents. Alongside this, the wide popularity and enthusiasm for this grape has ensured it will remain a firm favorite amongst wine drinkers for many years to come.

Vinous Media

Medium red. Enticing, highly nuanced nose combines red berries, minerals, brown spices, dried flowers and red licorice, with a hint of medicinal austerity. Silky on entry, then expands on the back half, showing sexy brown spices throughout. Not an obviously sweet style but boasts excellent vinosity and shape and finishes quite long, with fine tannins and lovely clarity.

Winery Notes

Musigny is remarkable for its great purity of colour. The aromas are reminiscent of violet and fruit stone when the wine is young. After eight to ten years, these aromas become very refined and complex: fallen leaves, damp earth, moss and hints of fur or leather. The tasting sensations are incomparable in terms of finesse and harmony. The tannins are elegant, although very much alive. Silk and velvet match the liveliness of the acidity. The lingering aftertaste is dominated by hints of rare, exotic woods as well as candied cherry.
