Riesling

Riesling grapes have been grown in and around central Europe for centuries, and over time, they became the lasting symbol of south Germany's ancient and proud wine culture. Whilst the reputation of German wines abroad has in the past been mixed, the Germans themselves take an enormous amount of pride in their wineries, and Riesling grapes have now spread around the globe, growing anywhere with the correct climate in which they can thrive. Riesling grape varietals generally require much cooler climatic conditions than many other white grapes, and they are generally considered to be a very 'terroir expressive' varietal, meaning that the features and characteristics of the terroir they are grown on comes across in the flavors and aromas in the bottle. It is this important feature which has allowed Riesling wines to be elevated into the category of 'fine' white wines, as the features of the top quality bottles are generally considered to be highly unique and offer much to interest wine enthusiasts.

Germany

As in many Old World countries, the rise of viticulture in Germany came about as a result of the Roman Empire, who saw the potential for vine cultivation in the vast flatlands around the base of the Rhine valley. Indeed, for over a thousand years, Germany's wine production levels were enormous, with much of the south of the country being used more or less exclusively for growing grapes. Over time, this diminished to make way for expanding cities and other types of industries, but Southern Germany remains very much an important wine region within Europe, with many beautifully balanced and flavorful German wines being prized by locals and international wine lovers alike. The hills around Baden-Baden and Mannheim are especially noteworthy, as these produce the high end of the characteristic semi-sweet white wines which couple so perfectly with German cheeses and pickled vegetables. However, all of Germany's wine producing regions have something special and unique to offer, and are a joy to explore and experience.

Pfalz

The beautiful German wine region of Pfalz is the second largest in the country, and a region recognized for its astonishing variety and the quality of its produce. With around 25,000 hectares of land in Pfalz under vine, the region produces an impressive amount of wine, considering the fact that the majority of wineries in the region are independent, small and traditionally run. The vineyards of Pfalz benefit enormously from their relatively warm, dry and sunny climate – exceedingly similar to that of nearby Alsace – and the high quality, mineral rich soils that typify the region. Although grapes have been cultivated in the Pfalz region since time immemorial, it was the Romans who first built up the wine region in the first century, introducing many grape varietals which can still be found growing there to this day.

The enticing nose has a wide spectrum of stone fruits with as much mirabelle as apricot with touches of honeysuckle and passion fruit. Stunning interplay of concentrated fruit and fine chalky minerality on the focused medium-bodied palate. Very long finish where the fruit is beautifully underlined by a hint of fine tannin. Drink or hold.

The 2021 Riesling Kallstadter Saumagen Spätlese trocken has a touch of dried lime and grapefruit zest on the nose, joining in with the aromatic pear and lovely Reine Claude and Mirabelle skin. There is fruit, but always with something textural. The palate bears this out with a harmonious, even flow and gentle ripeness. There's a very smooth spine of ripe freshness. This is quiet and unshowy - like the entire collection, but very convincing. The finish is yeasty, delving into deep limestone.

The 2021 Kallstadter Saumagen Riesling Spätlese trocken is deep, pure, refined and chalky on the nose that shows clear, bright and elegant fruit with a coolish-flinty character. Lush and dense as well as crystalline and persistently saline on the palate, this is an intense, sustainably structured and perfectly fruity Saumagen Spätlese with serious substance and aging capacity. There is beautiful, persistent salinity and savoriness here. A gorgeous wine to lay down for about five years. 12% stated alcohol.
