Deep amber-mahogany in colour – tasted blind it would be hard to say if this started out as red or white Port given the deep hues. Gloriously honeyed on the nose, singed with a touch of leite creme (Portugal’s answer to crème brulée). Mellifluous initially (131g/l residual sugar) with a lovely quince marmalade tang mid-palat. The finish still shows remarkable freshness and verve after all these years.

Today, the varied terroir and climate across Portugal allows a great range of wines to be made each year, from the fresh and dry Vinho Verde wines to the famous and widely drunk fortified Port wines, and many in between.

The magnificent city of Porto - the capital of Portugal - is located near the mouth of the beautiful Douro river, in the beating heart of the Douro wine region. The Douro region has been regarded as one of the most important viticultural region of Europe for several centuries, and was the third region to be officially recognized and protected as a wine region, with laws having been passed in the mid 18th century regarding its status. Porto is, of course, most famous for the production of Port wine, an aromatic and slightly viscous tawny colored fortified wine, with a fascinating history of seafaring, experimentation and innovation. The vineyards used in the region for the production of Porto's wines contain up to a hundred different grape varietals, resulting in the wide range of Port wines on offer today.

The NV 50 Year White Port was bottled in April 2022 with 123 grams of residual sugar and a bar-top cork. Shockingly fresh for its age, this is also delicious, concentrated and impressively long on the finish. It has a lot of characteristics of an old Tawny, but a very fresh old Tawny. The acidity enlivens this, though, making it both lighter and brighter than a typical Tawny. It has a refreshing quality that is appealing to go with its complexity. There's also power and grip, but it always tastes great. The finish goes on forever. This is a great white.
