Champagne Blend

The sparkling wines of Champagne have been revered by wine drinkers for hundreds of years, and even today they maintain their reputation for excellence of flavor and character, and are consistently associated with quality, decadence, and a cause for celebration. Their unique characteristics are partly due to the careful blending of a small number of selected grape varietals, most commonly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. These grapes, blended in fairly equal quantities, give the wines of Champagne their wonderful flavors and aromas, with the Pinot Noir offering length and backbone, and the Chardonnay varietal giving its acidity and dry, biscuity nature. It isn't unusual to sometimes see Champagne labeled as 'blanc de blanc', meaning it is made using only Chardonnay varietal grapes, or 'blanc de noir', which is made solely with Pinot Noir.

Region

Champagne

The beautiful rolling hillsides of the Champagne region of France have, for hundreds of years, been producing many of the world's most famous wines. The sparkling white wines to come out of Champagne's prestigious wineries have conquered the world, and are drank in celebration across the globe. The vast majority of the region is under vine, and grows predominantly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varietals, which are usually blended together by master wine-makers in order to make their recognizable and widely loved produce. The north-easterly region of Champagne has a relatively cool climate, and quite a lot of rainfall, making it far from ideal for ripening grapes. However, the presence of heavily forested areas in the region helps maintain a balanced temperature, and the generations of expertise the wineries hold clearly produces excellent results in spite of the climatic problems.

James Suckling

Super fresh and bright with musky red fruit aromas as well as gently marzipan scented biscuits on the nose; spices all here too. Great complexity and depth, really elegant, assertive and deep. Long and even, superb depth through the finish. Great wine. Drink young and precocious.

The NV Brut Rosé is brilliant and finely-sculpted in the glass, with floral aromatics, pulsating minerality and chiseled fruit. Less austere than it can be, the Rosé impresses for its combination of tension and textured, phenolic weight. There is so much to like.

This is an onion-skin-colored wine, ripe and showing some maturity as well as rich red and citrus fruits. It is beautifully balanced, the pure, crisp fruit elegantly integrated into the lightly mineral texture. This stylish bottling is ready to drink.

Wine & Spirits

Krug Rose includes ten percent pinot noir as red wine, taking the color to an elegant copper-pink and the flavor to a vinous range of fresh raspberry, juicy strawberry and floral sour cherries. It’s held in an oak structure, a supple, rich pinot noir with pretty, youthful freshness. Pour it as you would a silky Cote de Nuits; it has nothing of the weight of Vosne or Chambolle, carried instead by its flavor depth.

Fresh, cool and bright aromas include those of cherry blossom, just picked strawberries, raspberries, yeast and plenty of citrus influence. There is good volume to the utterly delicious medium weight flavors where the supporting effervescence is quite bright before terminating in a crisp, clean, dry and ever-so-mildly bitter finale. When I say ‘bitter’, it’s more in the mildly astringent way of a pit fruit character. This is a wine that could be enjoyed now or held for a few years first, particularly in magnum format.
