Sangiovese

The name of this grape, meaning 'blood of Jove' conjures up evocative images of long dead civilizations, and gives the Sangiovese varietal a sense of the holy, the sacred, the special. Indeed, this particular type of Italian grape has been cultivated and processed for thousands of years, and is said to be the original favorite grape varietal of the Romans, and the Etruscans before them. Throughout history, vintners have continued to plant this varietal, and they continue to produce wonderful wines to this day. The long bunches of very dark, round fruit are treasured by fine wineries in Italy and a few other places around the world, and when young, these grapes are lively â€“ full of strawberry flavors and a little spiciness. However, it is when they are aged in oak that they take on some truly special flavors and aromas, as seen in some of the finest wines of the Old World.

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva takes its time in the glass. This features an array of sweet spice, pipe tobacco and minty herbs elevating dried strawberry notes. It's soothingly round and pliant, with fresh acidity and masses of vibrant black cherry fruit and brilliant acidity that maintains a fantastic balance. A web of crisp tannins defines the finish, which is youthfully structured and long. It tapers off with a tart cranberry concentration and hints of bitter clove.

Gemini hails from a single plot of 25-year-old vines sitting at 400 metres above sea level on a mix of clay and sandy marls. Fermented and refined in 70-hectolitre truncated cone vats, the 2019 is über-clean, allowing its charismatic personality to shine. Penetrating floral scents are joined by rosemary and a suggestion of ground rocks, and the palate is awash with dark raspberry, pomegranate and a dollop of liquorice. A sleek and satisfying package, this is impeccably balanced by a firm spine of chocolaty tannins and brisk acidity.
