Rhone Valley

The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

Lovely fresh and vibrant expression, the floral Mourvèdre coming through well. Only medium-bodied, this is pleasingly restrained. Acidity is good, tannins are fine, and the overall effect is one of neatness, balance and finesse. Not a big wine by any means, but very nicely judged. Grown organically on the sandy soils of Les Bédines, this is fermented in tronconic vats then aged in foudres for 18 months.

While the fruit may be less explosive in the 2021 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Safres than in the 2020, it remains charming and seductive, a gentle ride of raspberries and cherries, wrapped in subtle herbal intricacies. It's medium to full-bodied, silky-textured and long on the finish.

A normal blend of Grenache and Mourvèdre that's all from sandy soils and brought up in a mix of demi-muids and foudre, the 2021 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Safres has brighter Bing cherry, leather, peppery herb, and building, exotic flower notes in its medium-bodied, nicely concentrated, elegant and seamless profile. It brings more depth and richness than the classic cuvée, has plenty of mid-palate depth, and ripe, polished tannins. Drink bottles over the coming 10-12 years. Tasted twice with consistent notes.
