Based on 59.9% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30.8% Merlot, and a whopping 12.3% Petit Verdot (this cuvée accounts for 21% of the total production of the estate), the 2018 Le Pauillac De Château Latour is impressive, and certainly an outstanding wine. Classic crème de cassis, violets, menthol, and complex floral notes all emerge from this medium to full-bodied, seamless, elegant wine. It continues to open up beautifully with time in the glass and I suspect will keep for 15 years or more. The best third wine out there? I’d say unquestionably.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

This has a lovely feel, with a mix of graphite and velvet textures carrying dark plum, warmed cassis and cherry reduction notes along. Flashes of alder, licorice and warm earth peek in throughout. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2032.

Firm, very silky and driven with blackberry and currant. Medium to full body, chewy texture and a lightly austere finish. Chewy and polished third wine of Latour.

Ripe red cherries and plums with tobacco and spice notes - this smells hot and heady, forward and indulgent. Mouthwatering straight away - juicy with sucrosity hinting at the hot vintage. Slightly thick and plump in the mouth but tannins are also firmly textured giving bite and spiced wood elements on the tongue. The Cabernet stands out giving a medicinal herbal element and wide menthol finish that makes it feel cool and fresh, though clearly there is power there. Still quite young. I like the composition, the nuance of elements with power, structure and heft, but also the definition you get at the end reminding you it’s a serious wine. 76 IPT. 5.7% press wine. 21% production. Harvest 17 September to 11 October. Technical director Hélène Genin.

The 2018 Le Pauillac de Château Latour is a blend of 56.9% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30.8% Merlot and 12.3% Petit Verdot. It has 14.1% alcohol and an IPT (total polyphenol index) of 76. Deep garnet-purple colored, it leaps from the glass with bold notes of black cherries, black raspberries and dark chocolate giving way to notions of blackcurrant pastilles, potpourri and cinnamon toast. Medium-bodied, elegant and refreshing with plush tannins and loads of mineral sparks accenting the fruits, it finishes with a skip in its step.
