I don’t remember a second wine of Mouton being so outstanding. This is really plummy and juicy on the nose with flowers and lots of everything. Full and velvety with a lovely texture. Long and very pretty. Plenty of chocolate and lightly toasted oak. Bright and exciting. Give it three or four years of bottle age.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

The 2008 Le Petit Mouton has a simple but effective bouquet with pure redcurrant and cranberry fruit laced with dried rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannin, crisp and taut with well judged acidity and real precision towards the finish. It is not long in the mouth, but a finely crafted Deuxieme Vin all the same. (Tasted at BI Wine & Spirits annual 10-Year On tasting.)

Taking advantage of its extremely high levels of Cabernet Sauvignon, this showcases sweet blueberry and blackberry notes, softened by the family signature of sexy glamour. Cedar oak is slightly dominant through the mid-palate, but it doesn't take long before the luscious damson fruit kicks in. This is a very good Petit Mouton, just starting to open up. Rich, round and ready to drink.
