Riesling

Riesling grapes have been grown in and around central Europe for centuries, and over time, they became the lasting symbol of south Germany's ancient and proud wine culture. Whilst the reputation of German wines abroad has in the past been mixed, the Germans themselves take an enormous amount of pride in their wineries, and Riesling grapes have now spread around the globe, growing anywhere with the correct climate in which they can thrive. Riesling grape varietals generally require much cooler climatic conditions than many other white grapes, and they are generally considered to be a very 'terroir expressive' varietal, meaning that the features and characteristics of the terroir they are grown on comes across in the flavors and aromas in the bottle. It is this important feature which has allowed Riesling wines to be elevated into the category of 'fine' white wines, as the features of the top quality bottles are generally considered to be highly unique and offer much to interest wine enthusiasts.

Australia

Whilst most of Australia consists of arid deserts and dense bushland, the oceanic coasts to the south of the country have a terrain and climate ideal for vine cultivation and wine production. It took several decades of failed attempts at the end of the 18th century in order to produce vines of a decent enough quality for making wine, but since those first false starts, the Australian wine industry has continued to grow and grow. Today, wine production makes up for a considerable part of the Australian economy, with exports in recent years reaching unprecedented levels and even overtaking France for the first time ever. Whilst the greatest successes in regards to quality have been the result of the Syrah grape varietal (known locally as Shiraz), Australia utilizes several Old World grapes, and has had fantastic results from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Riesling, Chardonnay and more. As the Australian passion for locally produced wine continues to develop, wineries have begun experimenting with a wider range of grape varietals, meaning that nowadays it isn't uncommon to find high quality Australian wines made from Petit Verdot, Sangiovese, Tempranillo and Viognier, amongst many others.

Region

Margaret River

When it comes to the south-westerly part of Australia, the Margaret River is by far the most important and productive of the area's wine producing regions. The region itself currently has over five thousand hectares of land under vine, and there are almost one hundred and fifty wineries operating there, making the most of the humid and warm climate many experts claim is remarkably similar to that which is found in the Bordeaux region of France. Such a climate can only produce fantastic yields of grapes of exceptional quality, and indeed, Margaret River currently produces almost twenty percent of Australia's wines. Both red and white wine grapes grow in the region, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Chardonnay and Sémillon being the varietals most commonly and widely grown.

The vines for this 2025 Art Series Riesling were planted in 1976, and it remains one of the very few Rieslings from Margaret River. It's always fleshy and herbal and a little exotic, but equally, it is saline, fresh and mineral, and the finish is long and chalky. I like this wine, always have. Sealed under screw cap. The 2025 vintage at Leeuwin Estate was defined by excellent growing and ripening conditions on the back of the hot, dry 2024 vintage prior. The fruit in 2025 shows good intensity, purity and balance. Significant late-winter rainfall replenished soil moisture and water reserves following a prolonged dry period, while favorable spring conditions supported healthy flowering, fruit set and vigorous canopy growth. Warm summer days moderated by cooling southeasterly breezes helped retain aromatic freshness and natural acidity. Riesling budburst occurred from late August into early September, with harvest beginning on 17 February and taking place over 10 cool nights to preserve aromatics, fruit expression and acidity. Modest yields from the estate's old-vine blocks enhanced concentration and complexity, resulting in a vintage distinguished by elegance, intensity and balance.

Bright and expressive with aromas of lemon zest, grapefruit, struck match, lime leaves, margarita and sherbet. The palate is tightly wound with electric, nervy acidity that leads into a mineral, mouthwatering finish. Ready to go now but will do well with time in bottle. Great fruit and length from old vines planted in 1977 and 1978. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Winery Notes

ragrant and energetic, the nose has an abundance of lychee, kiwifruit and blackcurrant with lime curd and lemon sherbet. Thai basil, sliced fennel, ginger and citrus blossom sit neatly in the background. A gentle entry leads to a delicately textured mid palate. Bursting lemon, lime and grapefruit dominate throughout with bright acidity, a slightly savory line and a talc-like finish.
