Rhone Valley

The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

Chateauneuf Du Pape

Châteauneuf-du-Pape, an illustrious wine appellation in the Southern Rhône Valley, France, stands as a vinous icon recognized for its robust red blends. What makes Châteauneuf-du-Pape unique is its historic heritage, boasting ancient vineyards and a rich winemaking tradition dating back to the papal residence in Avignon. The region allows an assemblage of up to 13 grape varieties, prominently featuring Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre. The distinctive galets, large round stones that retain heat, dotting the vineyards contribute to the wines' complexity and distinctive character. Restrained and stylish, loaded with gorgeous layers of cassis, raspberry and damson plum fruit that stream along, lined with anise, shiso leaf and iron notes. The long, pure finish shows terrific cut and focus. This should expand considerably in the cellar, as there's some latent grip. A superb effort for the vintage. Best from 2017 through 2030. 46 cases imported.

My favorite wine in the lineup was the 2013 Châteauneuf du Pape Barbe Rac. Coming from a plot of old vines located on the western side of the appellation and made from 100% Grenache, it offers vintage-defying levels of blackberry, currants, licorice and smoked herbs on the nose. These carry to a full-bodied, inky colored Châteauneuf du Pape that has a superb, voluptuous texture, excellent mid-palate depth and sweet tannin, all of which suggest it will evolve for 10-15 years.

(aged entirely in concrete tanks): Brilliant ruby-red. Explosively perfumed aromas of fresh raspberry, spicecake and potpourri take on a smoky mineral nuance with air. Offers palate-staining red fruit and floral flavors that stretch out and turn sweeter and spicier with air. Closes silky, minerally and long, with sneaky tannins and an emphatic echo of raspberry.
