Rhone Valley

The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

Velvety and harmonious texture with a delicate core of berries and herbs. Pure and transparent. Layered, succulent and well-balanced, with bright acidity and a lively peppery finish. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold.

The 2020 Cote Rotie Quatuor—a blend of four Chapoutier-owned parcels, hence the name—starts off with a bit of asphalt that seems to dissipate with air (at my request, we tried two bottles) to reveal more nuanced shadings of crushed stone, raspberries, blueberries and black olives. It's medium to full-bodied, with a crisp, linear feel and a long, silky finish. Definitely decant this if you're going to try it anytime soon.

The fleshy 2020 Côte-Rôtie Quatuor aged in a combination of 228-liter barrels and 600-liter with about 20% new oak. Vinified from fully destemmed grapes, it dazzles with prominent rose petal, violet, almond, black cherry, black plum, licorice and sweet spice. Forward and savory, the medium-bodied 2020 offers gentle grip on the complex finish.

The 2020 Côte Rôtie Quatuor offers more minerality and iron-like notes as well as attractive raspberry and fresh fig-like fruit characteristics. It too is just classic Côte Rôtie and is medium to full-bodied, with fine tannins, terrific balance, and a great finish. This cuvée is 100% Syrah and spent 18 months in 25% new French oak.
