Open and ready to go, this is showing well now, with a dab of good balsamic vinegar to the blackberry fruit. Fairly soft and easy-going style of Hemitage that is similar to the 2018 in many respects – approachable, if not terribly elegant (compared to the 2016 for example). But has really impact and power, and is rewarding drinking for now. A good time to drink this – but no hurry.

Moving to the reds, the 2011 Ermitage Monier de la Sizeranne doesn’t pull any punches and dishes up sexy, voluptuous levels of black cherries, raspberry, spice, dusty rock and crushed flowers. Medium to full-bodied, textured and with low acidity, it is distinctly delicious and hard to resist.

A selection of fruit from Méal, Bessards and Greffieux, Monier de la Sizeranne is tight and reticent in 2011, needing a day of air to get beyond its oak. Even then, the purple fruit feels held back by granite tannins, the contrast of ripe fruit and cool rock a reminder of the vintage’s cool spells. Drink now with a thick steak or hold another seven to ten years.
