Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Marquis d’Alesme Becker leaps from the glass with gregarious notions of plum preserves, crème de cassis and Black Forest cake with hints of potpourri, star anise, menthol and tapenade. Full, rich, firm and grainy, with fantastic freshness lifting the densely packed palate, it has a long, beautifully fragrant finish.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

The Margaux appellation of France's legendary Bordeaux wine region is one of the world's most famous and highly respected viticultural areas. For centuries, Margaux has been deeply associated with extremely fine wines of the highest quality, made using traditional and time-honored techniques in order to extract the very best, most refined and elegant flavors and aromas from the Bordeaux varietal grapes which grow there. Margaux wines are almost always blended, using two or three key Bordeaux grapes, commonly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc (amongst others). The blending techniques and quantities have been passed down through the generations in the ancestral chateaus which make up the region, and quality and prestige has never been allowed to falter, making Margaux one of the undisputed jewels in France's already glittering crown.

Talk about a gem in the vintage, I was blown away by the 2016 Château Marquis d'Alesme Becker on each of the three times I was able to taste it. This estate has been on an undeniable roll since the arrival of Marjolaine de Conicnck in 2009, and the 2016 is unquestionably the best yet. A blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and the rest Cabernet Franc, brought up in 65% new French oak, its deep purple color is followed by an essence of Cabernet bouquet that includes loads of crème de cassis, blueberries, graphite, crushed rocks, sandalwood, and violets. Almost Saint Julien in style, this beauty is laser-focused on the palate, medium to full-bodied, brilliantly textured, and has a blockbuster finish. It deserves 4-5 years of bottle age and will keep for 25-30 years. Bravo!

Ripe and fragrant nose that says Margaux loud and clear. Then comes the rather concentrated and powerful palate, where the supple tannins build nicely. Needs some time for them to resolve. Try it in 2022.

Alluring, with a core of warmed plum sauce and black currant paste flavors, melding with incense, black tea and alder notes. Shows a velvety texture on the finish and a perfumy echo as the fruit lingers gently. Best from 2022 through 2032. 5,000 cases made.

The 2016 Marquis d'Alesme Becker has been a little variable in the past, with inconsistent performances at Southwold. This example has a savoury, rather Mediterranean nose that perhaps lacks the composure and élan of the 2019 or 2020. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins and gentle grip, thankfully cleaner and more defined than previous bottles. Perhaps it shows a little sur-maturité towards the finish, a bit jammy compared to other vintages. Not bad, though not my favourite vintage in recent years.
