Of all the white wine grape varietals, surely the one that has spread the furthest and is most widely appreciated is Chardonnay. This green-skinned grape is now grown all over the Old and New Worlds, from New Zealand to the Americas, from England to Chile, and is one of the first varietals people think of when considering white wine grapes. Perhaps this is because of its huge popularity, which reached a peak in the 1990s, thanks to new technologies combining with traditional methods to bring the very best features out of the Chardonnay grape and allow its unique qualities to shine through. Most fine Chardonnay wines use a process known as malolactic fermentation, wherein the malic acids in the grape juice are converted to lactic acids, allowing a creamier, buttery nature to come forward in the wine. No grape varietal is better suited to this process than Chardonnay, which manages to balance these silky, creamy notes with fresh white fruit flavors beautifully.

The 2023 Chardonnay Olivet Lane Vineyard is gorgeous. Rich, creamy and expansive, the Olivet Lane offers up an attractive mix of orchard fruit, white flowers, tangerine peel and white pepper. The combination of fruit presence and energy is compelling. This is the essence of the Russian River in a cold year.

Matured for eight months in 41% new French oak, the 2023 Chardonnay Olivet Lane has slowly opening scents of matchstick, yellow peach, crème brûlée and jasmine. The medium-bodied palate offers ripe yet understated flavors and a gently mouth-coating texture. It’s balanced by refreshing acidity and has a long finish. 770 cases were made.

Winery Notes

The 2023 vintage has provided us with a stunning example of what this vineyard can produce. Its intense aroma is packed with crème brûlée, peach cobbler, lemon meringue pie, Fuji apple, rose petals, ripe pineapple, sweet tangerine and passion fruit. Honey, toasted hazelnuts, caramel and cinnamon provide complex accents. The entry is extremely lush and creamy joined by all the aroma components unfolding across the palate. With all of this richness, the vibrant acidity creates an exquisite, diamond-bright balance. To say this wine will age well is an understatement!
