A blend of 96% Chardonnay, 2% Muscat Canelli, and 2% Sauvignon Blanc, aged 8 months, 25% new French oak. This wine leaps out of the glass with honeysuckle and jasmine flowers, layered with salty sea spray aromatics that subtly reveal the blend’s composition. Hints of coriander cream and sandalwood add further complexity. It is fresh and light on the palate yet delivers significant impact through acid tension, nuanced by crushed Marcona almonds. Lovely phenolic grip and a saline-acid backbone drive the structure, leading to a lengthy finish of salted crushed stone and almond skin. Sourced primarily from Napa and Sonoma, this wine delivers elegance and depth in a beautifully layered expression.

Of all the white wine grape varietals, surely the one that has spread the furthest and is most widely appreciated is Chardonnay. This green-skinned grape is now grown all over the Old and New Worlds, from New Zealand to the Americas, from England to Chile, and is one of the first varietals people think of when considering white wine grapes. Perhaps this is because of its huge popularity, which reached a peak in the 1990s, thanks to new technologies combining with traditional methods to bring the very best features out of the Chardonnay grape and allow its unique qualities to shine through. Most fine Chardonnay wines use a process known as malolactic fermentation, wherein the malic acids in the grape juice are converted to lactic acids, allowing a creamier, buttery nature to come forward in the wine. No grape varietal is better suited to this process than Chardonnay, which manages to balance these silky, creamy notes with fresh white fruit flavors beautifully.

A blinding white gold and a chartreuse shimmer in the glass, the 2023 Mannequin opens with opulent, beguiling aromatics. Ripe golden apple, concentrated jasmine, citrus notes and a touch of cream and fresh brioche emerge. The entry is bright yet with a bit of weight; similar aromatic notes come through on the palate supplemented by rich honeydew and green apple. Tempered by a prominent vein of acidity, the wine closes at length with a seamless silk-like quality, finishing with pleasing minerality.
