Xarel-lo is a white grape variety native to Catalonia, Spain, primarily known for its role in producing traditional sparkling wines such as Cava. It is also used in still wines that showcase its aromatic qualities and vibrant acidity. Xarel-lo wines typically exhibit flavors of green apple, citrus fruits like lemon and grapefruit, along with subtle floral notes and a mineral edge. They are medium-bodied with crisp acidity, making them refreshing and well-suited for pairing with seafood, salads, and light dishes. What makes Xarel-lo unique is its contribution to the complexity and structure of Cava, where it blends harmoniously with Macabeo and Parellada to create sparkling wines known for their fine bubbles and delicate aromas. The grape's ability to retain acidity even in warm climates ensures the freshness and longevity of both still and sparkling wines, highlighting its importance in the Catalan winemaking tradition.

Each region of Spain has a wine quite distinct from the others, and it is produced by smallholders and families as much as it is by large companies and established wineries. From the relatively mild and lush regions of La Rioja to the arid plateaus that surround Madrid, grapes are grown in abundance for the now booming Spanish wine industry, and new laws and regulations have recently been put in place to keep the country's standards high. By combining traditional practices with modern technology, Spanish wineries are continuing to produce distinctive wines of great character, flavor and aroma, with the focus shifting in recent decades to quality over quantity.

The beautiful Spanish wine region of Catalunya has a history of viticulture which stretches back for over a thousand years, and has been influenced by a wide range of people who moved through the region, and brought their wine making skills and expertise with them. The region itself is a sizeable one, covering an area of sixty thousand hectares, and within this space there resides over two hundred individual wineries, ranging from small, independent and traditional ones to the larger, mass production bodegas known around the world. The terroir of Catalunya is varied, and ranges from being dry and arid, to more lush and green in the wetter parts of the region which are closer to the coast. This variation in terroir results in a fantastic range of grape varietals being grown, and a wide range of wine styles are produced within Catalunya.

The 2021 Pur Xarel.lo, which is sourced from different vineyards and is a village white for them, fermented with indigenous yeasts, partly in new 500-liter French oak barrels and partly in 1,600-liter concrete eggs, where the wine matured until bottling. It has 12.5% alcohol and a pH of 3.13. 2004 was the first vintage and the first serious aged white wines not produced with French varieties in the zone, feeling proud of the Xarel.lo grape. This is very clean and defined, designed to be able to age in bottle. 2021 was already a dry year, but the wine has no heat, ripeness or warmth, one of the advantages of the grape. It has some savory notes and a seamless palate with vibrant and focused flavors, getting more and more mineral with time in the glass. Ramón Parera compared it with 2017 and 2019, two years when the plants resisted the heat and delivered very complete wines. Their wines are more introverted and serious, subtle on the nose and with minerality on the palate. 6,520 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2022.

Winery Notes

100% Xarel-lo from 40-year-old vines planted on shallow, poor soils high in lime content. Half of the wine is made in concrete egg, and half in French oak barrels.
