There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Decanter

Deep purple colour in the glass. Heady on the nose, perfumed and floral. Quite strong with the aromas flowing out the glass. Lovely impact straight away, this is clear and well defined, a core of bright fruit - linear and quite a lean style of fruit but good definition supported by gently grippy, chewy tannins. Lots of potential here. I like it, even if the tannins are on the powerful and muscular side right now.

The 2019 Pavillon De Léoville Poyferré is another great second wine in the vintage and has a great bouquet of black cherries, mulberries, spicy incense, and sappy, floral nuances. With medium to full-bodied richness on the palate, it offers terrific complexity, supple yet present tannins, the freshness and elegance of the vintage, and a great finish. It will evolve for 15+ years or more.

Readers will have a hard time keeping their hands off this wine. And why wait? The 2019 is primed to deliver immense pleasure today. Bright red-toned fruit and lifted floral notes linger on the soft, caressing finish. Since 2019, the Pavillon has been a true second wine of Léoville-Poyferré, whereas in the past it was the second wine of both Léoville-Poyferré and Moulin Riche.

A blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Petit Verdot, the 2019 Pavillon de Leoville Poyferre is deep garnet-purple in color. It prances out with cheery notes of baked black and red cherries, blackcurrant pastilles, and rose oil, plus wafts of cinnamon stick and cedar. The medium to full-bodied palate is taut and muscular, with firm, ambitious tannins and a long earthy finish.
