Regularly described as being the grape varietal responsible for producing the world's most romantic wines, Pinot Noir has long been associated with elegance and a broad range of flavors The name means 'black pine' in French, and this is due to the fact that the fruit of this particular varietal is especially dark in color, and hangs in a conical shape, like that of a pine cone. Despite being grown today in almost every wine producing country, Pinot Noir is a notoriously difficult grape variety to cultivate. This is because it is especially susceptible to various forms of mold and mildew, and thrives best in steady, cooler climates. However, the quality of the fruit has ensured that wineries and vintners have persevered with the varietal, and new technologies and methods have overcome many of the problems it presents. Lots of herbs and red fruit on the nose. Medium-to full-bodied with steady minerality that drives the lifted cherry, strawberry and rosemary notes. Firm tannins. The acidity is well balanced and keeps the palate focused through the long finish. Best after 2023.

Medium ruby-purple, the 2019 Estate Pinot Noir Ama features pure, layered aromas of rhubarb, tart dried red cherries, burnt orange peel, blueberries and violet with tones of conifer and forest floor, continuing to offer new aromatic nuances with each return to the glass. The medium-bodied palate is bright and chalky, with youthfully coiled fruits and a long, spicy finish. On the nervy side, it will benefit from another 2-3 years in bottle.

The 2019 Pinot Noir Estate Ama is a rich, ample wine. Rose petal, blood orange sweet red cherry. Racy, succulent and perfumed, the Ama is one of the most approachable Pinots in this range, as it so often is. In 2019, the Ama is marked by a strong red cherry, blood orange and spice character. Not quite as open as it can be.

Winery Notes

For those who have been following Ama since its inception in 2009, you have witnessed this wine become more refined, seamless, focused and, frankly, delicious. The 2019 Ama has a red apple and deep, tart cherry nose with great intensity of fruit expression on the palate. There is good shape and texture on the mid-palate; not too fat and not too lean. The acidity is fresh and the finish is clean though it lingers. With more air (I decanted the rest of the bottle for 15 minutes) the copper and iron elements come out with deeper cherry notes fattening out the bottom. This is the bottle I selected to drink with medium rare lamb chops tonight. A great pairing.
