Subtle aromas of green olive, blackcurrant and black cherry follow through to a medium to full body with round, polished tannins and a juicy finish. Balanced and refined. Love the undertones of chocolate and hazelnut, too! Try after 2024.

Varietal

Red Bordeaux

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Appellation

Pomerol

Pomerol, a distinguished appellation on Bordeaux's Right Bank, stands as a vinous jewel celebrated for its exceptional Merlot-dominant red wines. What makes Pomerol unique is its relatively small size, allowing for an intimate focus on individual vineyards and an emphasis on artisanal winemaking. Unlike many Bordeaux regions, Pomerol does not have a formal classification system, placing the spotlight on each estate's intrinsic quality and distinct terroir. Merlot thrives in Pomerol's clay-rich soils, crafting wines of opulence, velvety texture, and alluring plum and black cherry notes. Iconic châteaux like Pétrus and Le Pin showcase the pinnacle of Pomerol's winemaking prowess. The absence of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blends further accentuates the appellation's uniqueness. Pomerol wines are revered for their approachability in youth and the ability to evolve gracefully over time, exemplifying the timeless elegance and allure of this exceptional Bordeaux appellation.

The 2018 Pensées De Lafleur is a blend of close to an even split of Cabernet Franc (54%) and Merlot (46%), and it comes all from a unique vein of more clay soils that run through the heart of the vineyard. Brought up in 25% new French oak, this beautiful, seamless Pomerol stands nicely on its own, offering complex notes of black cherries, framboise, spring flowers, damp earth, spice, sandalwood, and incense. This carries to a full-bodied 2018 with a layered, multi-dimensional texture, ripe, polished tannins, beautiful mid-palate depth, and a great, great finish. It's easy to discount this as a second wine, but that would be a mistake. This is a thrilling bottle that wine readers should snatch up.

The 2018 Les Pensées de Lafleur is a different kettle of fish compared to the Grand Vin. In fact, it should be treated as a separate Pomerol cuvée, since even though it comes from a tongue of more clayey soil within Lafleur, the resulting wine is much more sensual and richer in style. Plush red cherries and crushed strawberry fruit feature on the nose, rose petals scents forming after a couple of hours' opening. The palate is medium-bodied, soft in texture and approchable, displaying plenty of rondeur, with fine mineralité toward the finish and still just the faint acrid tang of a strong espresso on the aftertaste. I love this and it would not surprise me if blind, I ended up scoring it higher than the Grand Vin for the first few years.

The 2018 Pensees de Lafleur is deep garnet purple in color. It delivers notes of stewed cherries, prunes, and Christmas pudding, with wafts of anise, smoked meats, and tobacco. Full-bodied, the palate is rich and concentrated with plush tannins and soft acidity, finishing long and spicy.

Composed of 46% Merlot and 54% Cabernet Franc, the medium to deep garnet-purple colored 2018 Pensées de Lafleur bursts with plum preserves and redcurrant jelly scents, giving way to nuances of red roses, dusty soil, bouquet garni and tapenade with a waft of black truffles. The medium to full-bodied palate is oh-so-elegant, featuring very soft tannins and beautifully knit acidity to support the generous black and red fruits, finishing long and earthy. Give it a good 3 years to spread its wings and drink it over the next 15 years or more.

This is showing a more open aromatic profile at this stage than the Perrières with evident creaminess to the berry fruits and a softness to the tannins. It closes down on the finish, showing the depth and concentration behind the pleasurable opening. As it settles into the glass, a truffled earthiness comes through, along with touches of grilled coffee bean. Overall fairly exuberant at this point although bound to close down for a few years.
