Beautiful aromas of brambleberries, light chocolate, bark and nutmeg. Medium-bodied with fresh tannins and hints of terra-cotta and subtle coffee and chocolate undertones. So delicious and intense. Crushed stones add to the mineral, salty and ripe-fruit character that stays fresh. 57% merlot and 43% bouchet (cabernet franc). Drinkable but better in three or four years.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Leading off the wines from this fabulous château, the 2022 Pensées De Lafleur is based on 57% Merlot and 43% Bouchet (an older Cabernet Franc selection) that's from a unique vein of more clay soils in the vineyard. It's a sensational wine in its own right, and readers shouldn't overlook this. Ripe black cherries, damp earth, chocolate, and foresty, winter savory and tobacco notes all define the aromatics, and it's a voluptuous, round, incredibly seamless, sexy Pensées that's better than the vast majority of chateaux’s Grand Vins.

The 2022 Pensées de Lafleur is a head-turning, sensual wine, bursting with aromas of minty cherries and berries mingled with orange zest, black truffle and rose petal. Full-bodied, velvety and layered, it's deep, suave and seamless, with an enveloping core of fruit and tannins so polished that they caress the palate. This cuvée, derived from vines growing in the part of Lafleur's vineyard through which a water course once flowed and where the soils are richer in clay and better hydrated, still lives in the shadow of its grander sibling, but it's a must-purchase for me every year.

An absolute work of art, open and generous, floral, charming, expressive and aromatically captivating. Sweet red and black fruit, supple but svelte, dense but linear, immediately has weight on the palate but not in terms of pure tannic heft, even though they are present, the fruit has depth and layers with blackcurrant, liquorice, iris, dark chocolate and graphite, expanding upwards rather than width wise. Remains refined and sleek, not plush or opulent but controlled, and sensitive. Detailed and nuanced with such brilliant tannins, freshness and an enjoyable iron tang on the finish bringing you back to Lafleur and Pomerol.

The 2022 Les Pensées is very backward and reserved on the nose, but there is real power locked inside, mainly black fruit with touches of brown spice. The palate is medium-bodied with smooth tannins, just a patina of new oak to be absorbed, with pleasing fleshiness coming through on the satin-textured finish. Lovely. Very seductive. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting in London.

It comes barreling out with powerful notes of wild blueberries, juicy black plums, and boysenberries, leading to wafts of Sichuan pepper, tar, and black olives. The full-bodied palate is packed with rich, black fruits, framed by firm, rounded tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and earthy.
