The sparkling wines of Champagne have been revered by wine drinkers for hundreds of years, and even today they maintain their reputation for excellence of flavor and character, and are consistently associated with quality, decadence, and a cause for celebration. Their unique characteristics are partly due to the careful blending of a small number of selected grape varietals, most commonly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. These grapes, blended in fairly equal quantities, give the wines of Champagne their wonderful flavors and aromas, with the Pinot Noir offering length and backbone, and the Chardonnay varietal giving its acidity and dry, biscuity nature. It isn't unusual to sometimes see Champagne labeled as 'blanc de blanc', meaning it is made using only Chardonnay varietal grapes, or 'blanc de noir', which is made solely with Pinot Noir.

The beautiful rolling hillsides of the Champagne region of France have, for hundreds of years, been producing many of the world's most famous wines. The sparkling white wines to come out of Champagne's prestigious wineries have conquered the world, and are drank in celebration across the globe. The vast majority of the region is under vine, and grows predominantly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varietals, which are usually blended together by master wine-makers in order to make their recognizable and widely loved produce. The north-easterly region of Champagne has a relatively cool climate, and quite a lot of rainfall, making it far from ideal for ripening grapes. However, the presence of heavily forested areas in the region helps maintain a balanced temperature, and the generations of expertise the wineries hold clearly produces excellent results in spite of the climatic problems.

An enticing Champagne, with floral, spice and ripe fruit aromas drawing you into the glass. This is finely balanced and mouthwatering, pairing the generosity characteristic of the 2015 vintage with a firm, integrated structure. Flavors of ripe cassis, black cherry, blood orange pâte de fruit, toasted almond, sultana and crystallized honey expand on the satiny palate and through the long, mineral-driven finish. This is a pleasure to sip today, but there’s a long life ahead. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Disgorged March 2024. Drink now through 2045. 1,520 cases made, 75 cases imported.

The Clos des Goisses 2015 is a blend of 78% Pinot Noir and 22% Chardonnay that was 100% barrel fermented and finished with a 4.5 grams per liter dosage. Faint reductive notes blow off to reveal wonderfully fresh, creamy aromas of gariguette strawberry, rhubarb, vervain, crushed oyster shell and lightly toasted brioche. Medium-bodied with a pure, ripe fruit core and stimulating acidity adding a shimmering vibrancy to the delicate, pinpoint mousse. Overall this 2015 has a beautifully restrained, high-toned intensity that resonates like the constant tone of a tuning fork through the long, ethereal finish. Disgorged March 2024 (tasted four months post-disgorgement).18285 bottles produced.

The 2015 Extra-Brut Clos des Goisses is shaping up to be a jewel of a wine. This sample was disgorged, in other words with no dosage. What impresses me most about the 2015 at this stage is its density and nascent, embryonic power. In 2015, Charles Philipponnat and his team found that the wood-fermented lots blended best, so this is the first Goisses that was fermented entirely in wood. There's a balance of power and finesse that is especially captivating. (93-96)
