The sparkling wines of Champagne have been revered by wine drinkers for hundreds of years, and even today they maintain their reputation for excellence of flavor and character, and are consistently associated with quality, decadence, and a cause for celebration. Their unique characteristics are partly due to the careful blending of a small number of selected grape varietals, most commonly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. These grapes, blended in fairly equal quantities, give the wines of Champagne their wonderful flavors and aromas, with the Pinot Noir offering length and backbone, and the Chardonnay varietal giving its acidity and dry, biscuity nature. It isn't unusual to sometimes see Champagne labeled as 'blanc de blanc', meaning it is made using only Chardonnay varietal grapes, or 'blanc de noir', which is made solely with Pinot Noir.

The beautiful rolling hillsides of the Champagne region of France have, for hundreds of years, been producing many of the world's most famous wines. The sparkling white wines to come out of Champagne's prestigious wineries have conquered the world, and are drank in celebration across the globe. The vast majority of the region is under vine, and grows predominantly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varietals, which are usually blended together by master wine-makers in order to make their recognizable and widely loved produce. The north-easterly region of Champagne has a relatively cool climate, and quite a lot of rainfall, making it far from ideal for ripening grapes. However, the presence of heavily forested areas in the region helps maintain a balanced temperature, and the generations of expertise the wineries hold clearly produces excellent results in spite of the climatic problems.

Disgorged in 2017 with a dosage of nine grams per liter, the 2002 Rare Millésime continues to drink superbly, unfurling in the glass with a complex bouquet of tropical fruit, buttered toast, roasted cacao beans, caramelized sugar and a faint hint of rum. The palate is full-bodied, ample and mouthfilling yet fresh and tensile at its core, buoyed by bright acidity and culminating in a long, toasty, delicately saline finish. Beginning to show subtle maturity through darker fruit tones, it remains a balanced and generous rendition that will delight lovers of maturing Champagne while retaining the capacity to withstand the test of time.

This is top Champagne from Piper-Heidsieck, offering the delicious airy quality that's the hallmark of this house, with crisp apple flavor, tangy acidity and the first signs of yeasty, toasty bottle age. Its fruit intensity has transformed into a splendid selection. It's worth aging for a few more years, though also delicious now.

An attractive nose with plenty of toasty grilled cashews and bready aromas here, plus fresh peach and citrus fruits that are wrapped in caramel. Plenty of lemon as it breathes and freshens up. The palate's crisp and crunchy; lemon acidity pins a big mouthful of flavor in long and fresh. Drink now or for the next three to four years.
