Sangiovese

The name of this grape, meaning 'blood of Jove' conjures up evocative images of long dead civilizations, and gives the Sangiovese varietal a sense of the holy, the sacred, the special. Indeed, this particular type of Italian grape has been cultivated and processed for thousands of years, and is said to be the original favorite grape varietal of the Romans, and the Etruscans before them. Throughout history, vintners have continued to plant this varietal, and they continue to produce wonderful wines to this day. The long bunches of very dark, round fruit are treasured by fine wineries in Italy and a few other places around the world, and when young, these grapes are lively â€“ full of strawberry flavors and a little spiciness. However, it is when they are aged in oak that they take on some truly special flavors and aromas, as seen in some of the finest wines of the Old World.

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Brunello di Montalcino, an esteemed wine appellation in Tuscany, Italy, has been crafting exceptional red wines since its establishment in 1966. Focused exclusively on the Sangiovese grape, specifically the local Brunello clone, this region's unique terroir of warm, dry climate and well-drained soils imparts richness and complexity to the wines. The hallmark of Brunello is its extended aging, requiring a minimum of four years, with at least two spent in oak barrels. Wine Advocate

This is among the more conventional expressions of Brunello in the exciting Podere le Ripi portfolio. The 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Cielo d'Ulisse draws its fruit due west of Montalcino village in a location called Galampio (not too far from Marchesi Antinori's Pian delle Vigne winery). This area has a mix of silt, alluvial soils, sand, galestro and alberese. It's a true mixed bag. Grapes for this wine and the Rosso di Montalcino Sogni e Follia come from this same vineyard. The wine is redolent of concentrated black fruit, tobacco, toasted spice and fragrant cumin seed. It has a warm, Mediterranean personality with sweet berry flavors on the finish. The tannins are open-knit and velvety. The wine goes into botti for three years followed by one year in cement. Production is 15,380 bottles.

Wine Spectator

Black cherry, blackberry, earth and eucalyptus flavors highlight this beefy red. Sweet spices add grace notes, while the well-endowed tannins flex their muscles on the finish. Fresh and needs a year or two to harmonize. Best from 2027 through 2043. 1,300 cases made, 150 cases imported.

Winery Notes

Cielo d’Ulisse recalls the vegetation and environment of the western slope. Classic style, slightly tannic, it is diluted in the mouth. This Brunello on the nose recalls the wild forests and the cool microclimate of the vineyards where it comes from.
