Sangiovese

The name of this grape, meaning 'blood of Jove' conjures up evocative images of long dead civilizations, and gives the Sangiovese varietal a sense of the holy, the sacred, the special. Indeed, this particular type of Italian grape has been cultivated and processed for thousands of years, and is said to be the original favorite grape varietal of the Romans, and the Etruscans before them. Throughout history, vintners have continued to plant this varietal, and they continue to produce wonderful wines to this day. The long bunches of very dark, round fruit are treasured by fine wineries in Italy and a few other places around the world, and when young, these grapes are lively â€“ full of strawberry flavors and a little spiciness. However, it is when they are aged in oak that they take on some truly special flavors and aromas, as seen in some of the finest wines of the Old World.

With the forest green label, the organic San Polo 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Podernovi has a lifted bouquet with a hint of peppermint or menthol that gives buoyancy. There is some dried fruit, like pitted prune, but you also get fresher notes of blackberry and black cherry. Fruit comes from a three-hectare site with schistic galestro and mineral-rich clay soils. Dried rose and chalky tannins appear on the close. Production is 5,000 bottles.

The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Podernovi blossoms in the glass with a rich blend of plum sauce and clove lifted by sweet violet and lavender tones. This is pure elegance on the palate, silken and polished. Vibrant acidity and orange excite its tart wild berry fruits. Saline minerals combine with dusty tannins through the long finale. The 2019 tapers off with remarkable balance and youthful poise, leaving the slighted tinge of blackberry to fade. In a word, harmonious.

Also sporting a red/garnet hue, the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino Podernovi is savory with aromas of smoky earth, dried red cherries, dried roses, and dehydrated orange. Medium-bodied, it has refreshing lift, delicate salinity, and fine tannins, with a lot of bright energy and character on the finish. It’s a very pretty wine to enjoy over the coming 10-12 years.

The southeast oriented Podernovi vineyard sits on marl-rich clay soil. As with the previous couple of vintages, it is San Polo’s most successful Brunello bottling in 2019. It is the least evolved though still sports a slight bricky tinge and developing characteristics of tobacco and faded musk. Cinnamon and smoke lace through the more youthful palate. There is an attractive spaciousness to this buoyant, medium-bodied Brunello. Grainy tannins are ripe and well-fastened for mid-term drinking pleasure.

Crafted with Sangiovese grapes grown in the vineyard synonymous with the wine, it is among the most beautiful and archetypal of Montalcino. Podernovi is an elegant and poignant Brunello.
