The Alvarinho 2024 Granit comes from higher-altitude vines at around 400 meters above sea level. This results in the wine having more salinity and verticality because of the altitude and the granite soils (it wears the subtitle “Mineral Selection”). It fermented at a slightly higher temperature, avoiding the excessive aromatic intensity of the grape and giving a more austere profile, without malolactic, unoaked and with bâtonnage of three months to provide good integration of the acidity. This is usually among my favorite wines in the portfolio, and it is serious, elegant and sharp/mineral. It has moderate ripeness and 12.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.16 and 6.5 grams of acidity and is very tasty and with aging potential. And it’s very nicely priced too. 60,000 bottles, 500 magnums and 100 double magnums produced. It was bottled in March 2025.

Albarino

The pale skinned grapes of the Albarino varietal have been grown in and around Spain and Portugal for almost a thousand years, where they are highly enjoyed and prized by the locals for their distinctive aroma, and sharp, tart acidity levels. Over the past century, their influence has spread to the New World, and many vineyards keen to emulate the white wines of Spain have had considerable success with this varietal. The light bodied wines which are produced from the Albarino grapes have wonderfully aromatic properties, and carry ripe flavors of soft summer fruits, apricot and peach, with a mild and pleasantly bitter after taste brought on by their thick skins. Because of their acidic nature, they are a fantastic match for many Spanish foods, and are best served chilled on a hot day.

Granit has a bright, lemon-yellow colour, exhibiting elegant aromas with more mineral notes. The taste is crisp, dry, and persistent, with more earthy and stony flavours. There is a sensation of saltiness on the palate, reflecting the impact of the granite soils on Alvarinho.
