Touriga Nacional

Touriga Nacional is Portugal’s most esteemed red grape variety, best known for its role in Port wine and high-quality dry red wines. Indigenous to Portugal, it thrives in the Douro Valley and Dão region, where its low yields and thick-skinned berries produce wines with deep color, intense aromatics, and firm structure. Wineries in the Douro region utilize a huge amount of different local grapes for their characterful wines, but generally the most popular are made from Tinta Roriz, a rich and flavorful red wine grape related to Spain's flagship Tempranillo. However, there are plenty of different red and white grape varietals used in the region, all benefiting from the excellent hot weather and mineral rich terroir which characterizes the Douro valleys.

A fresh, well-knit red, with pretty violet, anise and mountain herb aromatics lacing the ripe and juicy blackberry, boysenberry and black cherry fruit and integrated, muscular tannins. This is compact today but still has enjoyable expression and length. It's hard to wait but it will shine with some time in the cellar. Best from 2027 through 2037.
