Regularly described as being the grape varietal responsible for producing the world's most romantic wines, Pinot Noir has long been associated with elegance and a broad range of flavors The name means 'black pine' in French, and this is due to the fact that the fruit of this particular varietal is especially dark in color, and hangs in a conical shape, like that of a pine cone. Despite being grown today in almost every wine producing country, Pinot Noir is a notoriously difficult grape variety to cultivate. This is because it is especially susceptible to various forms of mold and mildew, and thrives best in steady, cooler climates. However, the quality of the fruit has ensured that wineries and vintners have persevered with the varietal, and new technologies and methods have overcome many of the problems it presents. Alongside this, the wide popularity and enthusiasm for this grape has ensured it will remain a firm favorite amongst wine drinkers for many years to come.

The secret to California's success as a wine region has a lot to do with the high quality of its soils, and the fact that it has an extensive Pacific coastline which perfectly tempers the blazing sunshine it experiences all year round. The 2022 Pinot Noir Sierra Mar Vineyard is the most bracing and tensile of the Roar Pinot Noirs, opening with focused aromas of ripe red fruits, crushed stones, dried herbs and orange peels. The palate is opulent and saturated yet lined with a refreshing live-wire acidity, releasing into an inward, stony finish that will take some time to unwind. This does a beautiful job of instilling the region's natural ripeness with enough tension to support it.

The 2022 Pinot Noir Sierra Mar Vineyard falls slightly in the middle, style-wise, of the single vineyards. It's slightly richer than the Rosella's yet not as dark as either the Garys' or Soberanes. Beautiful red, blue, and black fruits, spring flowers, and baking spice notes all emerge on the nose, and it's medium-bodied on the palate and nicely concentrated, with the more forward, supple style of the vintage. It's a charmer that's ready to go, yet it should keep nicely through 2032 or so.

Dark mountain berries and spice take center stage, creating a bold and enticing profile. Beneath the ripe fruit flavors, a stream of fine minerality runs through, adding depth and complexity to the wine. Wild, savory elements interplay with the plump fruit flavors, creating a harmonious and intriguing balance. This Pinot Noir is delicate yet mysterious, with a supple and leathery texture that pairs well with many cuisines.
