Varietal

Syrah

Known as Syrah in most countries around the world, and Shiraz in Australia and certain other regions of the New World, this grape varietal has proven over the centuries to be one of the most powerful and flavorful red wine grapes there is. It is now one of the planet's most widely grown grapes, and is a favorite with wineries as a result of its robustness and versatility. It isn't easy to identify many characteristics of this particular varietal, due to the fact that it is highly versatile and shows significant differences in flavor and character depending on the terroir it is grown in, and the climatic conditions of the region. However, Syrah is most widely associated with full bodied, strong and loud red wines, packed full of fruity and spicy flavors, held in a beautifully deep red liquid.

Region

Rhone Valley

The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

Appellation

Cote Rotie

Côte-Rôtie, an esteemed appellation in the Northern Rhône Valley of France, stands as a beacon of Syrah excellence. What makes Côte-Rôtie unique is its dramatic topography, where steep terraced vineyards cling to the slopes of the Rhône River. The region's continental climate, combined with granite soils and ample sun exposure, contributes to the exceptional ripening of Syrah grapes, resulting in wines of unparalleled aromatic complexity and structure. Côte-Rôtie wines are characterized by their signature flavors of dark fruits, violets, and a distinctive smokiness. The appellation allows the co-fermentation of Syrah with a small percentage of Viognier, adding floral and aromatic dimensions to the wines. Producers like Guigal and Jamet exemplify Côte-Rôtie's commitment to tradition, crafting wines that showcase the synergy between terroir and grape variety. Exploring Côte-Rôtie offers a profound encounter with the pinnacle of Syrah craftsmanship, where the Rhône's hillsides give birth to wines of sublime beauty and complexity.

WA 94pts

Wine Advocate

The 2010 Cote Rotie Ampodium is performing much better from bottle than it did last year. Fashioned from a dozen separate terroirs in Cote Rotie, it exhibits tell-tale notes of licorice, tapenade, black currants and black raspberries with a floral component in the background. Beautifully textured, medium to full-bodied, rich and opulent, this superb Cote Rotie can be drunk now or cellared for 10-15 years.

Wine Spectator

Savory, white pepper and green olive notes lead the way for a supple, stylish core of damson plum and black cherry fruit. The silky finish lets the savory and pepper elements echo. Best from 2015 through 2025. 1,200 cases made.

VM 92pts

Vinous Media

Vivid ruby. Intense, spice- and floral-accented aromas of dark berry preserves, potpourri and Asian spices, with a bright mineral nuance gaining strength with air. Fresh and incisive, offering sappy black raspberry and boysenberry flavors and a sexy note of candied violet. Fine-grained tannins shape the long, juicy and penetrating finish, which echoes the floral note.

Decanter

Harmonious on the nose, still with plenty of fresh berry fruit. Gentle, velvety, with blackberries and raspberries all shot through with spicy stalk elements. Cinnamon, oregano, leather and subtle liquorice, finishing long and tapered. A good time to drink now, but will happy last several more years if kept in good condition. No destemming. Aged in 228l oak barriques and 600l demi-muids for 24 months using a minimum of new oak, just to renew barrels where necessary (typically 10%).
