Rhone Valley

The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

Chateauneuf Du Pape

Châteauneuf-du-Pape, an illustrious wine appellation in the Southern Rhône Valley, France, stands as a vinous icon recognized for its robust red blends. What makes Châteauneuf-du-Pape unique is its historic heritage, boasting ancient vineyards and a rich winemaking tradition dating back to the papal residence in Avignon. The region allows an assemblage of up to 13 grape varieties, prominently featuring Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre. The distinctive galets, large round stones that retain heat, dotting the vineyards contribute to the wines' complexity and distinctive character. Châteauneuf-du-Pape reds are known for their full-bodied nature, rich dark fruit flavors, and a medley of spices, all underscored by a unique herbaceous quality known as garrigue. Decanter

Very deeply coloured, with powerful, strict tannins, deeply mineral. At 10 years, it’s starting to show its potential. I enjoyed it, but this will be spectacular in another 10 years. It’s showing beef blood, iodine, truffle and hung game, but its development has only just started. Mint, graphite and blackcurrant too. It’s only medium-bodied, but so saline and mineral, full of energy and tension. Very fine but very tight tannins for now. A great wine in the making. Elemental and electric, with none of the overextraction, thickness or sweetness that can mar some Châteauneuf. Good now; better from 2026.

Aromas of raspberry and boysenberry confiture lead the way, followed by notes of mocha, cinnamon, black tea, bergamot, anise and singed apple wood, which are seamlessly entwined, finishing with a silky feel that lets the fruit take a lengthy encore. Distinctive and beautifully rendered. Best from 2015 through 2030. 350 cases made.

Opaque ruby. Heady dark berry, candied licorice and Indian spice aromas are brightened by a suave mineral nuance. Juicy, incisive and pure on the palate, offering sweet black raspberry and spicecake flavors that take on weight with aeration. The spicy quality dominates the very long, penetrating finish, which features smooth tannins and a sexy floral pastille nuance.

Winery Notes

From his original 5 acres in Pignan, Mounir has one plot, of 100% Grenache planted in the 1930s, which yields naturally at a miniscule 1 ton per acre. From these vines he produces Arioso, a Chateauneuf of astounding depth and finesse.
