White Rhone Blend

Rhone white blend wines, originating from France's Rhone Valley, exemplify a captivating interplay of grape varieties that contribute to their unique character. Viognier, Marsanne, Roussanne, and Grenache Blanc are key players in these blends, each bringing distinct aromas and flavors. What makes Rhone white blends unique is their aromatic complexity, offering a spectrum from floral and stone fruit notes to honeyed richness. The Northern Rhone produces exquisite whites like Condrieu, where Viognier takes center stage, delivering floral and apricot nuances. In the Southern Rhone, blends such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc showcase a harmonious mix of Marsanne, Roussanne, and other varieties, resulting in wines with depth and structure. Rhone white blends are celebrated for their ability to evolve with age, displaying increased complexity. Whether enjoyed in their youth for their freshness or aged for added richness, these wines invite enthusiasts to appreciate the artistry of blending and the diverse terroirs that define the Rhone Valley's winemaking landscape.

Region

Rhone Valley

The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

Appellation

Chateauneuf Du Pape

Châteauneuf-du-Pape, an illustrious wine appellation in the Southern Rhône Valley, France, stands as a vinous icon recognized for its robust red blends. What makes Châteauneuf-du-Pape unique is its historic heritage, boasting ancient vineyards and a rich winemaking tradition dating back to the papal residence in Avignon. The region allows an assemblage of up to 13 grape varieties, prominently featuring Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre. The distinctive galets, large round stones that retain heat, dotting the vineyards contribute to the wines' complexity and distinctive character. Châteauneuf-du-Pape reds are known for their full-bodied nature, rich dark fruit flavors, and a medley of spices, all underscored by a unique herbaceous quality known as garrigue. The appellation's commitment to traditional winemaking, coupled with its unique terroir, results in wines that exemplify the quintessence of Southern Rhône winemaking, offering enthusiasts a captivating taste of history and the sun-drenched landscapes of Provence.

WS 96pts

Wine Spectator

A distinctive, singular style, with tangy, salty layers of apple and melon powered by succulent lemon-lime acidity. Silky and finessed, wafting with smoke and flint on the close. Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Roussanne and Bourboulenc. Drink now through 2035.

Winery Notes

Another unsurprising but jawdropping discovery when encountering the Saouma wines: Magis, Mounir’s white Chateauneuf from the heavily limestone Pierredon vineyard in Bedarrides. It makes sense that a producer of great white Burgundy would quickly become enchanted by the possibilities here. Only 3% of Chateauneuf is white, and virtually all of it is bottled after 6 months. Mounir’s chateauneuf is aged 18-24 months and has already been compared to some of the great white Burgundy crus for its depth and minerality.
