Rhone Valley

The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape, an illustrious wine appellation in the Southern Rhône Valley, France, stands as a vinous icon recognized for its robust red blends. Deep, lurid violet. A highly perfumed bouquet evokes mineral- and spice-accented red/blue fruit liqueur, incense and floral oils, along with hints of cola and woodsmoke in the background. Sappy boysenberry, black raspberry, candied lavender and exotic spice flavors show a superb blend of depth and energy and turn sweeter through the back half. The berry and floral notes drive a strikingly long, smooth finish framed by polished, even tannins.

The 2017 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Omnia comes from multiple terroirs in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and is another fresh, elegant, yet textured wine from Mounir. Violets, exotic flowers, blueberries, cherries, and passion fruit notes all emerge from this beautifully textured, seamless 2017. It has good acidity, excellent purity of fruit, and nicely integrated acidity.

A blend of 80% Grenache and 10% each Mourvèdre and Syrah, the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Omnia takes a Burgundian approach, utilizing 100% whole clusters and then ages in barrel for two years without racking before being bottled by gravity, unfined and unfiltered. The result is cedary, with wood spice notes playing a leading role at this stage of the wine's development. Yet there's elegant cherry fruit in the background, and I suspect it will come forward as the wine ages, while remaining essentially delicate and fine-boned. Cellar this for another 2–3 years, then drink it over the following decade.

Omnia, Latin for “all,” is a wine that attempts to encompass the full diversity of the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation, both in its terroir and vinification. Fruit comes from vineyards in all 5 of the Chateauneuf communes (Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Courthezon, Sorgues, Bedarrides and Orange) and aged in foudre, cement and 500 liter barrels.
