Varietal

Tinta Barocca

Tinta Barocca is a red grape variety native to Portugal, primarily grown in the Douro Valley and used in the production of Port wine. It produces wines that are deeply colored, full-bodied, and richly flavored, with intense aromas of ripe dark fruits such as blackberry, plum, and black cherry. Tinta Barocca wines are characterized by their robust tannins and high alcohol content, which contribute to their structure and aging potential. What makes Tinta Barocca unique is its role in crafting traditional Port blends, where it adds depth, color, and complexity to both young and aged Ports. In recent years, Tinta Barocca has also gained recognition for producing dry red wines that showcase its fruit-forward character and the unique terroir of the Douro Valley. These wines are appreciated for their bold flavors, firm structure, and ability to evolve with age, offering a taste of Portugal's winemaking heritage and the diversity of the Douro's vineyards.

Country

South Africa

Situated on the very tip of the African continent, South Africa has proved itself over three centuries to be an ideal location for producing a wide range of wines. Benefiting from something not dissimilar to a Mediterranean climate, with long, hot summers complemented by both Atlantic and Indian Ocean winds, the grapes which grow on the valleys, mountainsides and plains of this fascinating country can ripen to their fullest capacity, producing wines packed full of fruity flavors and an array of interesting and enticing aromas. As a former colony, South Africa has long since been home to a range of different nationalities, who each brought something of their wine culture with them. As such, many European grape varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Riesling and others have been given time to flourish in South Africa, allowing the country to develop a diverse group of wine types which are proving increasingly popular around the world.

Region

Coastal Region

The coastal region of South Africa is one of the most prodigious and productive wine regions on earth, and one which covers a vast distance making up for most of the tip of the African continent. The history of South African wines is a fascinating and surprisingly long one, with the very first wines in the country being produced by settlers in the 1650s, long before many other New World countries had even been discovered. Today, coastal South African wines are wildly popular around the world thanks to their big, fruity flavors and relative simplicity. Wineries in the region make the most of the hot sunshine, the high quality soils, and the brisk oceanic winds which keep disease at bay and stop the grapes from getting too hot, and produce a wide variety of wines of great distinction.

Appellation

Swartland

JS 96pts

James Suckling

This spicy, brooding yet pure wine has aromas of licorice, violets, blackberries, cranberries, graphite and hints of fennel. It’s medium- to full-bodied, firm and focused, with fantastic spicy undertones. Lots of structure. Tight and firm finish. Tinta barroca from 50-year-old vines. Try after 2026.

WA 95pts

Wine Advocate

Another exciting maiden vintage, The Sadie Family 2024 Swartland Die Distriksreeks Twiswind is broad yet tightly wound, offering stone fruit richness balanced by beaming acidity and fine white-wine tannin grip. This complex field blend—with Vermentino, Picpoul, Marsanne, Grenache Blanc, Cinsault Blanc, Palomino, Chenin Blanc, Grillo, Assyrtiko, Verdelho, Clairette Blanche and Semillon—creates both weight and tension in equal measure. Grown on a wind-exposed 1.14-hectare Swartland site, the vineyard’s constant airflow naturally limits vigor and preserves freshness.
