Long Term Pre-arrival Definition: Ordering wine directly through us from our supplier partners in Europe in advance of the item’s physical arrival in the US.
Long Term Pre-arrival sales ensure you’re getting the best possible price and that you have also secured the product before it hits the normal retail supply chain. The lead time for Pre-arrival goods is generally 4–8 months, sometimes longer based on supply chain and the logistics of transporting goods overseas. The expectation, from our team, is to communicate to the customer the location of their purchase every step of the way.
This product is offered as a full case purchase option, minimum order quantities may be applicable. When available, multiple case options will be presented. If you are purchasing a Pre-Arrival item you must order a solid case.
Rapid Ship
Items listed as "rapid ship" are in stock and available for immediate pickup or shipment. Those that do not have the "rapid ship" icon are housed with our supplier and must be transferred to our warehouse before they can be picked up or shipped. This requires 4-6 business days but usually occurs sooner. Some products will list both options of availability as there will be a certain number in stock, with the option to order additional bottles to be transferred from the supplier.

Riesling grapes have been grown in and around central Europe for centuries, and over time, they became the lasting symbol of south Germany's ancient and proud wine culture. Whilst the reputation of German wines abroad has in the past been mixed, the Germans themselves take an enormous amount of pride in their wineries, and Riesling grapes have now spread around the globe, growing anywhere with the correct climate in which they can thrive. Riesling grape varietals generally require much cooler climatic conditions than many other white grapes, and they are generally considered to be a very 'terroir expressive' varietal, meaning that the features and characteristics of the terroir they are grown on comes across in the flavors and aromas in the bottle. It is this important feature which has allowed Riesling wines to be elevated into the category of 'fine' white wines, as the features of the top quality bottles are generally considered to be highly unique and offer much to interest wine enthusiasts.

As in many Old World countries, the rise of viticulture in Germany came about as a result of the Roman Empire, who saw the potential for vine cultivation in the vast flatlands around the base of the Rhine valley. Indeed, for over a thousand years, Germany's wine production levels were enormous, with much of the south of the country being used more or less exclusively for growing grapes. Over time, this diminished to make way for expanding cities and other types of industries, but Southern Germany remains very much an important wine region within Europe, with many beautifully balanced and flavorful German wines being prized by locals and international wine lovers alike. The hills around Baden-Baden and Mannheim are especially noteworthy, as these produce the high end of the characteristic semi-sweet white wines which couple so perfectly with German cheeses and pickled vegetables. However, all of Germany's wine producing regions have something special and unique to offer, and are a joy to explore and experience.

Mosel-Saar-Ruwer
The Mosel-Saar-Ruwer region in western Germany is famous for producing some of the world’s finest Rieslings. Steep, slate-covered slopes along the Mosel, Saar, and Ruwer rivers reflect sunlight and retain heat, helping grapes ripen in a cool climate.
This terroir yields aromatic, high-acid Rieslings with striking minerality, low alcohol, and a balance of sweetness and freshness. Styles range from bone-dry to lusciously sweet, often with exceptional aging potential.
The region’s best wines come from terraced vineyards like Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Scharzhofberger, and Ürziger Würzgarten. Manual vineyard work is intense, but the payoff is elegance and precision in the glass.
Mosel-Saar-Ruwer wines are transparent expressions of site and vintage. While mostly white, they offer incredible diversity in style and structure—making them essential for any wine lover exploring Germany’s classic regions.

Picked mid-October at 96° Oechsle, the 2022 Zeltinger Schlossberg Riesling Auslese Schmitt is still pretty reductive on the deep, precise and flinty nose. Lush and savory on the palate, this is a refreshing, clear and vivacious, grippy and tensioned Riesling from 43-year-old vines in a south-facing but open-to-the-wind vineyard. The finish is intense and stimulating, and after a decade—or better, two—this should be an excellent gastronomic wine for even meat dishes. 7% stated alcohol plus 99.8 grams per liter of residual sugar. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in November 2023.

The 2022 Riesling Zeltinger Schlossberg Auslese Schmitt is fully south-facing and located on the lower mid-slope. The nose is still dominated by funky reduction. The juicy palate unites herbal savor, candied apple, vivid red apple, Reine Claude plum and ripe peach. This is lively, aromatic, shimmering with these various fruits and adding a little herbal spice such as crushed yarrow and fine slate. Vivid and lasting with 99g/L of residual sweetness. (Sweet)
Winery Notes
This is one of a trio of en-bloc harvested single parcels. Bearing in mind that the fundamental principle is to wait as long as possible and then pick the whole vineyard in a single pass. Thus the wine is more of-a-piece than usual, and it’s also well up into the Auslese echelon. Indeed this wine is so rich it almost subsumes its charged minerality – almost! If the palate follows the aroma that mineral will emerge, though it may take some years.
