Rhone Valley

The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

This is glorious, with a seamless, velvety texture that lets a stunning display of warm cassis and plum puree flavors stretch out, with black tea, smoldering sweet tobacco and cast iron notes unfurling slowly along the way. Alluring hints of anise, incense and juniper flash throughout, with all the elements beautifully detailed through the finish. A captivating wine. 96-97 From a plot on the top of the slope, this has a very fragrant and sappy aroma with crushed stones and a wealth of spices and mountain herbs, as well as roasted meats and delicate blue fruit. The power here is impressive and has a very attractive and succulent feel with a dense, juicy and rich plum and blueberry finish. Dense with suave texture. Impressive Côte-Rôtie. Drink over the next 15 years.

This is the third time I've tasted Stéphane Ogier's 2017 Cote Rotie Lancement, and it has been consistently outstanding. Vaguely floral notes add intrigue to the deep raspberry and cassis fruit, balanced by more savory notes of coffee beans and charred beef. It's medium to full-bodied, sturdy and muscular, with plentiful (but ripe) tannins that give the lengthy finish a rich, velvety texture. I suspect it will close down shortly, then reemerge in several years and drink well through 2040.
