The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. Still reductive at this stage, the 2016 Mes Grands Lieux stands out as one of the most inherently complex, delicate and perfumed wines of the vertical tasting. It unwinds slowly in the glass, revealing aromas of dark berries, rose, timut pepper, mocha, tapenade and mulberries. Full-bodied yet remarkably poised, it is dense and deep, built around a multidimensional core of fruit framed by filigreed tannins and energized by incisive acidity, extending into a long, ethereal and seemingly endless finish. Here, acidity plays a defining role, conferring both lift and finesse while ensuring the wine’s capacity to age gracefully for two decades or more.

The 2016 Côte-Rôtie Mes Grands Lieux is a little reductive at first. A short rest in the glass gradually brings out black fruits, leafy tones and dried violets. Citric tones add more layers. Medium-bodied and utterly lifted, the 2016 strikes superb overall harmony, leading into the close with magnificent balance on the refined finish. 97% Syrah and 3% Viognier were co-fermented.
