From ungrafted vines and one of the truly exceptional wines from Tarlant, the 2006 Champagne Blanc de Blancs La Vigne d’Antan Brut Nature is expressive in its bouquet of honeysuckle, toasted brioche, lemon curd, and white peach. Full-bodied, it fills the palate with wonderful depth and purity, offering ripe fruit and fantastic freshness. A complete wine, it has a refined mousse with refreshing acidity and wonderful salinity on the finish. This exceptional wine is my favorite from Tarlant once again, and it will be a treat to revisit over the coming decades. Drink 2023-2043. Disgorged June 2022.

The sparkling wines of Champagne have been revered by wine drinkers for hundreds of years, and even today they maintain their reputation for excellence of flavor and character, and are consistently associated with quality, decadence, and a cause for celebration. Their unique characteristics are partly due to the careful blending of a small number of selected grape varietals, most commonly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. These grapes, blended in fairly equal quantities, give the wines of Champagne their wonderful flavors and aromas, with the Pinot Noir offering length and backbone, and the Chardonnay varietal giving its acidity and dry, biscuity nature. It isn't unusual to sometimes see Champagne labeled as 'blanc de blanc', meaning it is made using only Chardonnay varietal grapes, or 'blanc de noir', which is made solely with Pinot Noir.

The beautiful rolling hillsides of the Champagne region of France have, for hundreds of years, been producing many of the world's most famous wines. The sparkling white wines to come out of Champagne's prestigious wineries have conquered the world, and are drank in celebration across the globe. The vast majority of the region is under vine, and grows predominantly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varietals, which are usually blended together by master wine-makers in order to make their recognizable and widely loved produce. The north-easterly region of Champagne has a relatively cool climate, and quite a lot of rainfall, making it far from ideal for ripening grapes. However, the presence of heavily forested areas in the region helps maintain a balanced temperature, and the generations of expertise the wineries hold clearly produces excellent results in spite of the climatic problems.

A savory beam of singed apple wood enriches flavors of dehydrated white raspberry, mandarin orange peel, chamomile and toasted raisin bread in this statuesque Champagne. Silky on the palate and almost viscous, with seamlessly integrated, mouthwatering, fine china–like acidity. This is long and well-spiced on the refreshing finish. A compelling, long-aged example from this opulent vintage. Disgorged June 2024. Drink now through 2040. 100 cases made, 25 cases imported.

The 2006 Brut Nature La Vigne d'Antan is another highlight in this range from Tarlant. Candied ginger, pear, spice and exotic white flowers all grace the palate in a super-refined edition of the Tarlant flagship. All the elements are so well balanced. La Vigne d'Antan emerges from a site near the winery with own-rooted vines on sandy soils. Disgorged: October 15, 2025

The pinnacle of the range, Tarlant’s 2006 La Vigne d'Antan Brut Nature Blanc de Blancs is sourced from a northeast- and northwest-facing site planted to ungrafted Chardonnay in the lieu-dit Les Sables in Oeuilly, where sandy soils helped protect the vines from phylloxera. Aged in oak for seven months and disgorged in June 2024 after 17 years sur lattes, Benoît Tarlant made the decision to release the 2006 ahead of the 2005. It leaps from the glass with aromas of buttered wheat toast, ripe pear, blanched almonds and pastry mingling with green apple. Full-bodied and textural, it is layered and multidimensional, with a generous fruit core but a bright, incisive personality, concluding with a long, electric finish. Compared to the 2004 rendition, it is fuller-bodied and more inviting—and I intend that as a compliment.
