Sliced apple, pineapple, apricot and crushed stone aromas follow through to a medium body with creamy texture and pleasant bitter lemon flavors at the end. 72% sauvignon blanc, 16% vermentino, 6% viognier, and 6% verdicchio. Drink or hold.
Poggio Alle Gazze has always been a stylistic outlier in Tuscany, comprising a majority of Sauvignon Blanc (72% in 2021) along with 16% Vermentino, 6% Viognier and 6% Verdicchio, vinified and matured in a combination of barrique, stainless steel and concrete. It displays aromas reminiscent of summer flowers waving in the sea breeze, while flint, oyster shell and subtle stone fruits add delightful complexity. Juicy peach, passion fruit, lychee and mango burst forth on a stony, mineral palate, with some sapid green fruits emerging to remind you of its Sauvignon roots. The finish is long, spicy and textural, with some apple, citrus peel and yellow fruits. A superb food wine; try with seafood, creamy pasta dishes, or figs and goats cheese on crusty bread.
A bright pale yellow color, the 2021 Poggio Alle Gazze is 72% Sauvignon Blanc, 16% Vermentino, and the rest equal parts Viognier and Verdicchio. Reminiscent of a great Bordeaux Blanc, it opens in the glass to aromas of Meyer lemon oils, green pineapple, jasmine, and white peaches. It’s medium-bodied, although it has phenomenal concentration and length without ever feeling austere. It floats across the palate with ease and is mouthwatering, with a fantastic finish. An exceptional wine, it certainly has the potential to age gracefully over the next 8-10 years.
Made mostly with Sauvignon Blanc, the 2021 Poggio alle Gazze dell'Ornellaia reveals a luminous and transparent appearance with fresh aromas of passion fruit, citrus and green apple. The wine is very focused in this classic vintage with upfront acidity and pretty mineral notes. Ornellaia is one of the only estates to offer a Sauvignon Blanc in this part of Tuscany. This bottle is especially popular at the many local fish restaurants along the coast.
This white starts out round and fleshy, reminiscent of gooseberry, peach and elderflower in its aromas and flavors. Firms up midpalate, where a bitter citrus element emerges along with mouthwatering acidity. Salty finish. Sauvignon Blanc, Vermentino, Viognier and Verdicchio. Drink now through 2027. 352 cases imported.
The 2021 Poggio alle Gazze dell'Ornellaia is such a classy wine. Bright and finely cut, the 2021 races across the palate with hints of lemon confit, sage, mint and white flowers. The 2021 is vibrant and energetic but also has plenty of depth.
The nose opens with herbaceous, savory aromas of lemongrass, thyme and sage, then stone fruit notes of white peach and apricot emerge, along with a touch of tangerine and copper. The palate is juicy and honeyed, with a rich, round texture that's lifted by citrus and a subtly bitter almond skin flavor. Substantial but still very refreshing.
