Sangiovese

The name of this grape, meaning 'blood of Jove' conjures up evocative images of long dead civilizations, and gives the Sangiovese varietal a sense of the holy, the sacred, the special. Indeed, this particular type of Italian grape has been cultivated and processed for thousands of years, and is said to be the original favorite grape varietal of the Romans, and the Etruscans before them. Throughout history, vintners have continued to plant this varietal, and they continue to produce wonderful wines to this day. The long bunches of very dark, round fruit are treasured by fine wineries in Italy and a few other places around the world, and when young, these grapes are lively â€“ full of strawberry flavors and a little spiciness. However, it is when they are aged in oak that they take on some truly special flavors and aromas, as seen in some of the finest wines of the Old World.

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. The Tenute Silvio Nardi 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Vigneto Poggio Doria (with just 3,500 bottles made) is a very different wine compared to the village expression from this same vintage. Whereas that wine showed more dry fruit aromas, this wine has a sweeter side with plump richness and soft tannins. It also carries more fruit weight and overall textural richness. Between the two, I recommend this one.

This is ripe, boasting black cherry, boysenberry, leather and tar notes, plus a touch of milk chocolate. A dense matrix of broad, rough-hewn tannins backs this up, shutting down the finish at this stage. This red calls for bistecca. Best from 2028 through 2045. 290 cases made, 50 cases imported.

Winery Notes

Intense ruby red colour. Ample and complex notes at the nose: little red fruits and spices melt with mineral and balsamic hints. Elegant and balanced at the palate, full-bodied and persistent, it is characterized by a great texture and concentration, with present and smooth tannins.
