The Caley from Yalumba has quickly established itself as one of the benchmark wines in the ‘Great Australian Blend’ category. An elegant representation of how well Coonawarra cabernet sauvignon and Barossa shiraz (at 77/23% split) can work together in the right hands. There is a black-fruited intensity to its form, fine spice and cedar tones suffusing slowly through the wine with tobacco, dried herbs, pressed flowers, pencil shavings, cinnamon and roast beef. Texturally, it’s a stunning wine: super pure black fruits, a silken flow, fine, powdery tannin, lacy acidity and a graceful, extended retreat from the mouth with lingering black fruit flavours, cedar and spice.

Whilst most of Australia consists of arid deserts and dense bushland, the oceanic coasts to the south of the country have a terrain and climate ideal for vine cultivation and wine production. It took several decades of failed attempts at the end of the 18th century in order to produce vines of a decent enough quality for making wine, but since those first false starts, the Australian wine industry has continued to grow and grow. Today, wine production makes up for a considerable part of the Australian economy, with exports in recent years reaching unprecedented levels and even overtaking France for the first time ever. Whilst the greatest successes in regards to quality have been the result of the Syrah grape varietal (known locally as Shiraz), Australia utilizes several Old World grapes, and has had fantastic results from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Riesling, Chardonnay and more. As the Australian passion for locally produced wine continues to develop, wineries have begun experimenting with a wider range of grape varietals, meaning that nowadays it isn't uncommon to find high quality Australian wines made from Petit Verdot, Sangiovese, Tempranillo and Viognier, amongst many others.

Limestone Coast

The Limestone Coast of South Australia is one of the country's most important wine producing regions, with almost one third of all Australian wines originating there. As the name suggests, this stretch of coastline is geologically significant, being made primarily of mineral rich limestone, and thus providing plenty of nutrients for the range of grape varietals that thrive there. Interestingly, unlike many of the wine regions of Australia, the Limestone Coast has a healthy water table, meaning there is plenty of moisture below the soil, and thus solving any problems relating to irrigation that causes difficulties for wineries elsewhere in the country. Plenty of different vines flourish in this fertile region, most notably Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, and also many white wine varietals such as Chardonnay and Viognier.

This blend has concentrated aromas and flavors of mint chocolate, sage, cedar, olives, black cherries and blackcurrants. It’s full-bodied, muscular and broad-shouldered, but exhibits sensitivity and excellent savory restraint. Firm finish.

Made only in high quality vintages, this is the seventh release of The Caley, maintaining its mix of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon from Coonawarra with 25% Shiraz from Eden Valley. Matured for 19 months in 24% new French barriques, with the rest in older French oak barrels, it’s an opulent, rich red symphony of big blackberry and plum flavours, wrapped in a seamless palate that strikes gloriously harmonious notes. The result is a big, formidable yet charming wine in ideal balance, completed by a crisp mineral finish. It will be fascinating to see how this develops after a decade in the cellar.

A blend of old-vine fruit from both Coonawarra and Barossa, this is an elegant and understated icon bottling that’s still very young. Plump berries are at the core, with leafy Cab-like edges, leather, gentle peppery spice and a slight smoky nuance. Tannins are muscular yet pliable, making room for the supple fruit, but overwhelming by the finish, indicating the need for more time in bottle. (Cellar Selection)
