Bourbon

Bourbon is a distinctly American whiskey, legally defined by strict production requirements. To be labeled bourbon, it must be made in the U.S., with at least 51% corn in its mash bill, distilled to no more than 160 proof, and aged in new, charred oak barrels. It must enter the barrel at no more than 125 proof and be bottled at a minimum of 80 proof. Unlike other whiskies, bourbon cannot contain additives like flavoring or coloring—its character comes solely from grains, fermentation, distillation, and barrel aging. Bourbon is known for its rich, smooth, and slightly sweet profile, with flavors of caramel, vanilla, oak, and spice. The high corn content contributes to its sweetness, while the charred oak barrels impart deep caramelized notes and a distinctive warmth. Whether enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or in cocktails like the Old Fashioned, bourbon remains a cornerstone of American whiskey culture.
