Joseph Drouhin

Maison Joseph Drouhin has built a heritage over the decades through various experiences, judicious acquisitions, and family agreements. The Estate is now one of the largest in the region, encompassing 93 hectares in Chablis, Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune, Côte Chalonnaise, and Mâconnais. Their holdings include some of the most prestigious Grand Crus and Premier Crus “climats”, planted with the two iconic Burgundian grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Founded by Joseph Drouhin in 1880, the House quickly made a name for itself by focusing on wine quality, respecting the diversity of Burgundy’s vineyards, and quickly combining the roles of négociant, producer, and owner. The Drouhin reputation strengthened, and a distinctive style emerged, characterized by finesse and elegance. Generations have succeeded each other, guided by the revelation of these magical terroirs and unwavering ethics.

Starting in 1918, Maurice Drouhin, aimed to expand the family company, acquiring vineyards and building his own estate. In 1957, his son Robert took over and continued to expand the family Domaine. In addition to the acquisition of several Premier and Grand Crus , Robert invested heavily in Chablis; acquiring nearly 40 hectares in the historic heart of the appellation. He also established the House’s oenology laboratory with one of Burgundy’s first woman oenologists. In 1987 Robert showed great foresight by venturing across the Atlantic to establish Domaine Drouhin Oregon, with his daughter Véronique.

Philippe, the eldest son of Robert, assumed leadership in 1988, marking the arrival of the fourth generation. Deeply concerned about environmental issues and biodiversity balance, Philippe made the decision to steer the estate’s practices towards virtuous viticulture, organic and biodynamic farming. At the same time, a significant effort was made to preserve viticultural heritage by developing mass selections within the Estate’s own nursery. 

Today, the four great-grandchildren of Joseph Drouhin hold key and complementary positions to sustain and expand the family business. The fifth generation is also beginning to emerge, with Laurène, the eldest daughter of Véronique, joining the House in 2020. Vintage after vintage, they uphold tradition and innovate, continually striving for that “elegant perfection” which has earned Joseph Drouhin wines their renowned reputation.
