The sparkling wines of Champagne have been revered by wine drinkers for hundreds of years, and even today they maintain their reputation for excellence of flavor and character, and are consistently associated with quality, decadence, and a cause for celebration. Their unique characteristics are partly due to the careful blending of a small number of selected grape varietals, most commonly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. These grapes, blended in fairly equal quantities, give the wines of Champagne their wonderful flavors and aromas, with the Pinot Noir offering length and backbone, and the Chardonnay varietal giving its acidity and dry, biscuity nature. It isn't unusual to sometimes see Champagne labeled as 'blanc de blanc', meaning it is made using only Chardonnay varietal grapes, or 'blanc de noir', which is made solely with Pinot Noir.

The beautiful rolling hillsides of the Champagne region of France have, for hundreds of years, been producing many of the world's most famous wines. The sparkling white wines to come out of Champagne's prestigious wineries have conquered the world, and are drank in celebration across the globe. The vast majority of the region is under vine, and grows predominantly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varietals, which are usually blended together by master wine-makers in order to make their recognizable and widely loved produce. The north-easterly region of Champagne has a relatively cool climate, and quite a lot of rainfall, making it far from ideal for ripening grapes. However, the presence of heavily forested areas in the region helps maintain a balanced temperature, and the generations of expertise the wineries hold clearly produces excellent results in spite of the climatic problems.

Full-bodied, charming, broad and fleshy, with pristine balance, it’s a seamless, complete and vinous Champagne of compelling purity and maturity.

An impeccably balanced and graceful sparkling rosé, with a plushly creamy mousse. It's hard to tell where the firm spine of well-honed acidity and the expressive range of pureed raspberry, candied ginger, tangerine and lemon thyme flavors begin or end. A rich hint of smoky toasted brioche plays on the finish. Drink now through 2033. (Highly Recommended)

The 2008 Dom Pérignon Rosé seems to have put on a little weight since I last tasted it, especially in the mid-palate. Bright and classically austere, the 2008 sizzles with all of the tension that is such a signature of the vintage. Finely drawn, sculpted lines shape this wonderfully saline, taut Rosé. Crushed flowers, rose petal, chalk and sweet red cherry build with a bit of coaxing.

Cool ruby hue that isn't deep though perhaps just a bit deeper than a typical oeil de perdrix shade. An exuberantly fresh and bright nose speaks freely of various red fruits along with plenty of citrus, quinine and a pretty floral hint while the yeast influence is relatively subdued, at least for now. There is fine volume to the solidly concentrated flavors that are supported by a very fine yet quite fine effervescence that imparts both fine delineation as well as a certain power that seems to build from the mid-palate to the explosive finish. This is superb and only getting better each time I am privileged to enjoy it. As to maturity, while it's sufficiently far along that it's no vinous crime to open one, I would suggest waiting until around 2028 or so before digging in seriously.

Offering up aromas of white flowers, red berries, toast and fresh pastry, Dom Pérignon rosé 2008 is medium to full-bodied, tense and vibrant, with a vinous texture and sapid nuances. Delicately phenolic, this is a pure and racy gastronomic Champagne that’s beginning to drink with style, and concludes with a long and penetrating finish.

The 2008 Champagne Rosé is another elegant expression, offering notes of cardamom, strawberry, and dried flowers. The palate is dry and well-structured and is balanced and long on the finish, with notes of dried orange peel, redcurrant, and fantastic salinity. It has a great application at the table and should continue to improve over the next 15-20 years.
