A fantastic prestigious cuvée this year with a solid core of fruit that makes it so serious and structured. Like a grand cru Burgundy. Full body. Lightly chewy. Phenolic tension gives it form and beauty. This is the first year to use numbers. 55% chardonnay and 45% pinot noir. 2007, 2006 and 2004. Drink or hold.

Varietal

Champagne Blend

The sparkling wines of Champagne have been revered by wine drinkers for hundreds of years, and even today they maintain their reputation for excellence of flavor and character, and are consistently associated with quality, decadence, and a cause for celebration. Their unique characteristics are partly due to the careful blending of a small number of selected grape varietals, most commonly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. These grapes, blended in fairly equal quantities, give the wines of Champagne their wonderful flavors and aromas, with the Pinot Noir offering length and backbone, and the Chardonnay varietal giving its acidity and dry, biscuity nature. It isn't unusual to sometimes see Champagne labeled as 'blanc de blanc', meaning it is made using only Chardonnay varietal grapes, or 'blanc de noir', which is made solely with Pinot Noir.

Region

Champagne

The beautiful rolling hillsides of the Champagne region of France have, for hundreds of years, been producing many of the world's most famous wines. The sparkling white wines to come out of Champagne's prestigious wineries have conquered the world, and are drank in celebration across the globe. The vast majority of the region is under vine, and grows predominantly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varietals, which are usually blended together by master wine-makers in order to make their recognizable and widely loved produce. The north-easterly region of Champagne has a relatively cool climate, and quite a lot of rainfall, making it far from ideal for ripening grapes. However, the presence of heavily forested areas in the region helps maintain a balanced temperature, and the generations of expertise the wineries hold clearly produces excellent results in spite of the climatic problems.

The NV Brut Grande Cuvée Grand Siècle No. 24 (Magnum) is ethereal and beautifully lifted. White flowers, mint, white pepper and green orchard fruit all grace this exquisite, super-expressive Champagne. I would cellar the No. 24, as it is pretty tight today and also not ready to deliver the full Grand Siècle experience. The blend is 2007 (60%), 2006 (20%) and 2004 (20%), three vintages that are especially complementary. Disgorged May 27, 2019. (Originally published in August 2020)

From magnum, disgorged in June 2024 with a dosage of seven grams per liter, Laurent-Perrier’s NV Grand Siècle N°24—a blend of the 2007, 2006 and 2004 vintages, predominantly anchored in the youngest—sources fruit from all 11 grands crus traditionally considered for inclusion in this cuvée. The blend is 55% Chardonnay and 45% Pinot Noir. In the glass, it reveals a bouquet of candied pear, lemon confit, freshly baked bread, dried flowers and hazelnut. Medium- to full-bodied, open-knit and demonstrative, it offers a sweet fruit core supported by a racy spine of acidity. Though slightly less concentrated than the N°26 and N°27 iterations, it remains a compelling release—particularly in magnum—concluding with a precise, saline-tinged finish. It has yet to show the tertiary signatures of age such as moss or licorice.

An animated Champagne. The vibrant, crystalline frame of acidity and the finely detailed mousse support rich hints of toasted brioche and briny mineral, layered with flavors of Jonagold apple, candied lemon zest, spun honey and ripe blackberry. Sleek and racy on the lasting, spiced finish. Drink now through 2027. 400 cases imported.

This iteration has slightly more Pinot Noir than in the current blend (55%), coming from Ambonnay, Bouzy, Verzy, Mailly, Tours-sur-Marne and a bit from Verzenay. The Chardonnay, (45% of the blend) comes from Avize, Cramant, Chouilly, Oger and Le Mesnil. The overall impression is of a lovely, creamy wine with rich aromas of ripe apple and just a hint of tropical passion fruit aromas. The blend is 60% from the 2007 vintage and 20% each from 2006 and 2004. This wine is opening now but will hold for decades if properly cellared. Dosage: 7g/L.
