The 2019 Clos Puy Arnaud is fabulous, just as it was in barrel. Plush and beautifully layered, with soft contours and silky tannins. Dark fruit, mocha, cloves, licorice, violets and spice all build as this flamboyant Castillon Côtes De Bordeaux opens with a bit of air. In a word: superb.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

A bright and expressive wine bursting with freshly picked red berries - raspberries and strawberries with touches of black cherry. Beautifully silky smooth texture which glides across the tongue - there is so much energy and life to this. A little bit of heat is felt on the finish - touching on cedar and clove spice which adds a piquance and a touch of austerity but it's nicely balanced by the juicy mineral-edged fruit flavours. Just give this a few more years. A very charming and easy-to-enjoy wine with structure, length and lots to enjoy. A top name to know in Castillon.

Mulberries, praline, dried flowers, clay and bark on the nose. Medium-bodied with fine tannins. Round and creamy with harmonious, fruity character and a silky texture. Pure and delicious. So vibrant. 70% merlot, 25% cabernet franc and 5% cabernet sauvignon. From organically grown grapes. Delicious already, but better from 2024.
