Of course, it was the rise of the Roman Empire which had the most lasting influence on wine production in Italy, and their influence can still be felt today, as much of the riches of the empire came about through their enthusiasm for producing wines and exporting it to neighbouring countries. Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.

The beautiful island of Sicily has been growing grapevines and producing wines for thousands of years, ever since the ancient Greeks first landed on its golden shores and noticed the island's true potential as a haven for quality grapes. Today, the island is one of Italy's primary wine regions, and even though over eighty percent of Sicily's grapevines are used for the production of sweet fortified wines, the remaining wineries making other wine styles are renowned around the world for their quality and character. Indeed, Sicilian wineries are famed for their ability to capture something of the sun-drenched region in their wines, and the vines they cultivate benefit enormously from the almost constant sunshine and the incredibly fertile volcanic soils which typify the island.

This is very fine-grained, with berry, light vanilla bean and pumice. It’s medium-bodied with dried herbs, wet earth and light green coffee beans. Creamy-textured and juicy. From biodynamically grown grapes. Delicious and very drinkable now, but better in 2023.

Shavings of blood orange combine with dusty rose and dried strawberry as the 2019 Nerello Mascalese Spinasanta blossoms in the glass. Lifted and refined, it offers tart red berry fruits underscored by crunchy mineral tones, while a bump of zesty acidity maintains fantastic energy. The palate is saturated in primary concentration. The 2019 finishes spicy and long, with an air of lavender pastille that resonates.

Made with Nerello Mascalese in cement only, the Nicolò Grippaldi 2019 Sicilia Spinasanta is a fine and almost fragile expression of this special grape. Biodynamic practices are employed in this small 1.3-hectare plot, and the winemaking style takes inspiration from the formidable Castello dei Rampolla in Chianti Classico. It is a hand’s-off style, with spontaneous fermentations and no commercial yeasts or other additives. The wine reveals a thin, shiny appearance with aromas of sour cherry, pressed violet and dried herb. There is a pretty sense of tradition in this vintage that shows a big jump up in clarity and intensity from the 2018 edition. I’d love to come back to it in a few more years. Only 3,200 bottles were made.

Wild aromas of forest berry, earth and sweet tobacco with deep flavors of plum, cassis and currants on a medium bodied frame and a long, elegant finish with fine tannns.
