Nero D'avola

One of the key flagship grape varietals of the beautiful island of Sicily is Nero d'Avola, a black skinned grape which is recognized as being one of Italy's most important and long lasting indigenous grapes. Often, wines made from the Nero d'Avola varietal are compared with Australian Shiraz wines, as they share the same spicy, peppery and fruit-forward notes, and are easily drinkable with a sunny, juicy character which makes them ideal for pairing with a wide range of foods. The Nero d'Avola has been grown in the Sicilian region of Avola for centuries, but has more recently been cultivated in California and elsewhere in the New World, where it thrives in arid landscapes and hot climates. As such, the ancient influence of this grape varietal is beginning to find fans all over the globe, and is likely to spread to even more countries in the near future.

The beautiful island of Sicily has been growing grapevines and producing wines for thousands of years, ever since the ancient Greeks first landed on its golden shores and noticed the island's true potential as a haven for quality grapes. Today, the island is one of Italy's primary wine regions, and even though over eighty percent of Sicily's grapevines are used for the production of sweet fortified wines, the remaining wineries making other wine styles are renowned around the world for their quality and character. Indeed, Sicilian wineries are famed for their ability to capture something of the sun-drenched region in their wines, and the vines they cultivate benefit enormously from the almost constant sunshine and the incredibly fertile volcanic soils which typify the island.

Lovely aromas of baked strawberries, crushed cherries, black tea and roses. Full-bodied with powdery tannins that coat the mouth. Nuanced and light-footed with subtle concentration that allows for a generous finish. Very nicely balanced and articulate. Oolong and rooibos come through. Delicious. From biodynamically grown grapes. Best after 2025.

With a traditional-looking label and a red wax capsule, the Nicolò Grippaldi 2020 Sicilia Salvatore Grippaldi is organic Nero d'Avola from a 1.3-hectare site with blue clay soils. It sees a spontaneous fermentation and matures in cement tanks. The wine shows a blackish dark appearance with aromas of dark plum, blackcurrant, sweet earth, black olive and crushed flowers. It shows less of the volatile character that we see in the other wines. It ends on a sweet note of dark cherry with mild tannins. This is a 3,000-bottle release.

Winery Notes

Dark and ruby in color with welcoming aromas of black berries, prunes and oak. The palate mimics the aromatics with a creamy, velvety texture with fine tannins and a incredible length that lingers for a very long time. An incredibly impressive red wine with lots of personality that is guaranteed to age for at least a decade.
